The next day I have reached a decision, and am on my way to find Miyoko.
(I don't want Miyoko to give up on her dream...)
(That's why I have to do this.)
I tell myself over and over, taking hold of the living room door.
(Okay, I'm doing this.)
I enter to find Miyoko is there to meet me as I asked, sitting on the sofa.
"Ah, Mina."
"H-hey."
"You said you needed to talk to me?"
"Yeah..."
I take I deep breath, then whisper.
"Um..."
"About you going away to live on an island..."
The moment I speak her expression clouds over like it did the day before.
"Hm...I'm still thinking about that."
"Ah, well...You see, I think..."
I know what I'm about to say will probably hurt her.
(But I made my decision. I'm going to support her in realizing her dream...)
I gather up my conviction and tell her.
"Um, i..."
'Yes?"
"I think you should go and be a teacher!"
"Huh?"
"S-so...you should go to that island."
"Even if we are apart, we'll be just fine..."
She freezes at my sudden declaration.
"Mina...?"
(I knew she would look confused...)
But I pretend not to notice and continue speaking.
"L-living on an island sounds like fun...and I know you'll make a great teacher."
"S-so..."
"H-hold it!"
She closes in on me, confusion written all over her face.
"W-Why are you saying that all of a sudden?"
"Are you really okay with being apart?"
"Well, we can have a long distance relationship?"
"But one year is so long..."
"We'll be fine."
The truth is that the thought of a long distance relationship is enough to rip me apart.
(But this is for her.)
"You've wanted to be a teacher for a long time, haven't you? Go to the island."
"If you do can make your dream come true."
"That's true, but..."
She whispers pain etched all over her face.
"I don't want a long distance relationship..."
"But Miyoko, it's only one year..."
"That's like no time at all."
"That's..."
"You don't really mean that, do you?"
"I do..."
(Sorry I have to say this but I'm doing this for you.)
"Why..."
"Mina, why?!"
And then.
(Hm?)
She looks as if she is about to say something, but she shuts her mouth firmly once more.
(M-Miyoko?)
(Why is she not saying a word?)
She looks away for a moment thinking.
Then finally, she whispers.
"I see..."
"You're completely fine with me not being here..."
"Uh..."
(That's not true...I'm not fine. I want to be with you...)
The words are on the tip of my tongue and I quickly swallow them back again.
Then...
"Alright..."
She nods minutely.
"Mina..."
"Y-yeah?"
She looks indecisive for a moment.
She looks like she is about to cry as she whispers.
"Thank you..."
"Well then..."
She goes straight back to her room.
I replay the conversation we just had over and over in my head.
(Thank you? Did she just understand what I'm trying to do for her?)
I have a slight I idea what she meant but it felt odd for some reason
(this is how it's supposed to be...)
Even if she doesn't understand now, she will...
Going to that island and making her dream a reality is more important than staying here, with me...
Or so I tell myself, suppressing any lingering feeling of doubt.
And a few days later...
