Chapter 40

"Zaine?" Tanong ko sa lalakeng nasa terrace.

He looked at me and smiled. "Happy midnight."

Lumapit naman ako sa kanya at tinabihan siya. "Why are you awake?"

"Hmm, let's just say I miss my mom and Jamie." He said as his eyes sparkle.

I've always seen those eyes smiling. Kahit kalian yata hindi naging masungit ang mga mata niya. His eyes are always smiling, if not it's always innocent. Siya yung tipo na kapag tinitigan mo, parang ayaw mong saktan.

"Sandali lang 'to, surely hindi ninyo namamalayan na aalis na rin kayo." I said and did my best to smile, hiding the loneliness.

"But there's a part of me that doesn't want to leave." He stared at my eyes. "'Cause leaving this place means leaving you Xyzzy. I don't want that to happen. Xyzzy I'm liking you more every day."

I looked away. "Narinig mo naman 'di ba Zaine yung sinabi ko kanina."

Nilinaw ko kanina sa kanilang lahat na wala akong balak patulan ang kung sino man sa kanila.

So naalala ko na naman yung nangyari kanina. And I'm afraid for my best friend. Hindi namin alam kung nasaan na sila. At hanggang ngayon hindi pa umuuwi si Breii.

Jusko baka naman ginahasa at binuntis na ni Breii 'yon. 'Wag naman po sana Panginoon, may pangarap ako sa kaibigan ko.

I tightly closed my eyes with the thought.

"Xyzzy why?"

"Ha?" Agad kong tanong sa sinabi ni Zaine.

I glanced at him and saw him staring at the stars with loneliness.

"Why don't you let me court you? Do you like Brile?" He looked at me.

I sighed. "Wala akong gusto sa kung sino sa inyo." I looked back at him. "Trabaho ko kayo Zaine. Hindi ako pwedeng magkagusto sa inyo."

"Papa will understand-"

"Zaine ayoko." I said while shaking my head. "Ayokong makagulo."

"Gulo? Brile? You think I can't beat him?"

"It's not about that Zaine! Can you hear yourself? Hindi ganyan magsalita si Zaine. I don't wanna ruin what you have. Gosh! Ni hindi ako sobrang ganda para umasta kayong dalawa ng ganyan." I said aloud.

He locked his eyes on me so I did the same. "I never liked someone like this."

"Zaine, 'wag na 'ko. Marami pa diyan. Ang daming nagkakagusto sa'yo."

"I will make you like me Xyzzy." He whispered. "I don't care if Brile's doing the same."

"Magsasayang ka lang ng oras Zaine. Please, just find someone better." I sincerely said.

He smiled. "I will court you. No one will make me change my mind. Maghihhintay nalang ako. I'm used to it."

"What if I'll like someone else?" I asked.

"Don't worry Xyzzy, most of the times I just smile every time when I'm hurt." He said and weakly smiled.

He held my hand and moved closer before caressing my cheek.

"Zaine ayokong masaktan ka. Pero kung magmamahal ako wala sa inyong Mendoza 'yon."

"Can I hug you?" He asked instead.

Before I could even react he already pulled me for a hug.

"Zaine..."

"I will still show you how much I like you." He broke the hug but what he did surprise me.

He leaned on me and gently brushed his lips on mine for seconds that made me push him away.

"What the hell Zaine?!" I snapped.

"I'm sorry Xyzzy but I'm not sorry for brushing off Brile's marks." That's what all he said before leaving.

Napahilamos nalang ako at napamura. Everything's getting messier.

Ilang minuto pa 'ko doon sa terrace na natunganga bago nagmamadaling pumasok sa kwarto at ini-lock yung pinto at isinandal ang ulo ko do'n.

"I'm still a better kisser."

Napaharap ako agad nang marinig ko ang boses niya. Of course my heart begun to beat fast.

I saw him by the window, thanking the lampshade for the light; he's there hitting a cigarette, puffing smoke, intently looking at me.

"Ano na naman ba'ng ginagawa mo dito?!"

I swear hindi ko na alam ang nararamdaman ko! It scares me to death every time I see him inside my room or in any private places!

"Why do you have to let him kiss you?" Madiin niyang tanong at basta tinapon nalang sa kung saan yung sigarilyo niya.

"Ano ba kasing pakialam mo? Pinakialaman ba kita noong nakipag-halikan ka? Kahit pa makipag-sex ka diyan hindi kita papakialaman!" I turned to unlock the door as fast as I can but before I could even open the door he slammed it close.

"You fucking behave Xyzzy bago ko mapatay si Zaine!" Galit na galit niyang sabi at sinuntok yung pintuan malapit sa mukha ko.

I cried in fear and tried to move away from him. "Layunan mo 'ko please!"

"Paulit ulit mong sinasabi na hindi ka papatol sa kung sino man sa amin pero gano'n yung trato mo sa kanya! Napuputang ina na 'ko!"

"Walang masama sa trato ko sa kanya!" I wiped my tears and pushed him. "May gusto man siya sa 'kin o wala gano'n pa rin ang trato ko sa kanya! Kung nagtataka kung bakit ako ganito sa'yo, use your head! Hindi puro 'yang nasa baba!" I sobbed. "Sinong babae ang hindi maiinis o lalayo sa taong basta basta gumagawa ng kamanyakan?! Ha?!"

"You will never treat me the way you treat Zaine! You don't even glance at me if I don't do things like these! At putang ina I will not accept a defeat from anyone if it's about having you!" He pulled me by the arms and dragged to throw at the bed.

"Brile please!" Umiiyak kong sabi dahil sa totoo lang doble na ang takot ko.

He looks like a beast with those eyes.

"Xyzzy I will make you mine!" He said as he holds my wrists, pulling me closer to him. "I can even make you mine in a way that you will never like."

"Ano ba talaga'ng gusto mong mangyari ha?! What do you really want? Please naman!" I said in desperation as I try to pull my hands from him. "If you're thinking that you will have me by doing shits no you won't! You are making me hate you more!"

"Don't wait for history to repeat itself... I might also do what my dad did to get my mom." He seriously said before kissing me aggressively on the bed.
