Song: Unique by Lenka
"Sorry if I embarrassed you or bothered you...I didn't mean..." He takes all the notes and stuffs them in his bag.
"Hey those were mine."
"Do you want them back?" He smiles while reaching back into his bag to pull them out. He hands them back to me. "Let's start over...hi...I'm Kodiak." He holds out his hand for me to take.
Of course I don'ttake it. Instead I fold my arms in front of me, hiding my hands. "I know your name already and you happen to already know mine."
"Ophelia...I like it. Don't think I ever met an Ophelia before." He says with a wide smile. He has perfect white teeth and when he smiles there is a cute little indentation in his cheeks. I like the way he says my name and it makes me blush.
I look down at my phone to check the time. "Well lunch is over; I got to get to class." I stand up and he does too. He walks beside me and I don't dare say anything because I have a feeling he is not planning on going anywhere. A get this weird feeling like he would like to hold my hand, so I keep my arms folded around my books.
After school I try to get to my car as fast as I can, hoping to avoid him however when I look up he is leaning against my car. What is it with this guy? Why can't he take the hint by now.
Ok...so this guy must be stocking me. Seriously I just want to be alone. When he looks up at me he has the biggest grin ever and it takes everything in me to smile back at him.
"Hi!"
I exhale, "hi." I open up the back door to throw in my stuff in the back seat. I roll my eyes. "What do you want Kodiak?"
He grin from bvb ear to ear. "I was thinking..."
He is always thinking.
"I'm free this afternoon. You wanna go get a milkshake or something?"
"I...I...I was pl...pla...anning on...going...home, actually." I try not to stutter but I can't help the nerves. How more embarrassing can I get.
"Come on Ophelia, I'll treat." He nudges my arm and I take a step back.
I exhale again and shake my head no. What is he really up to this has got to be a joke, a bet between his buddies. Something because no one has ever asked me out before. I can't help but bite my bottom lip and roll my eyes at him yet again. "Just a milkshake?"
"Yes...you can even drive if you want." And before I can say anything he tosses his stuff in my car and gets in the passenger side and is smiling ear to ear.
I get in and fasten my seatbelt. I adjust the mirrors even though they were fine where they were. I slowly pull out of the parking lot and drive to the Drugstore, because they have the best milkshakes in town, not to mention the décor is dated in the fifties and I love it there. My parents have brought me here a million times over the years and the owners know me so well that they always know exactly what I want.
When we get there he holds the door open for me and lets me walk in first. I don't ask him where he wants to sit. I always sit at the counter. He picks up the menu but I don't even bother because they already know what I want.
Tabitha comes over and smiles at me. She is chewing gum like always and trying not to smack it because she knows I can't stand that sound. I told her that when I was little. I told her she was freaking annoying always smacking like that and my parents had to explain why I was so upset and so now she respects me when I come in. "Oh...look Henry...it's our Ophelia." She yells to Henry who is in the back. "It's been a minute...where have you been...what can I get you sweetie?"
I look at her like she has got to be joking. She laughs in return. "The usual...I assume. And what about your feller here...what would you like sir?"
"I don't know, do I want something fruity...crunchy...maybe creamy...I don't know so many choices to choose from." He keeps looking 9very all the different flavors.
Please pick creamy, please pick creamy I say to myself. Anything chunky in milkshakes or ice cream is just wrong, it needs to be smooth...it has to be smooth. And beside I really don't feel like gagging today, so please for the love of God, pick creamy.
Tabitha smiles at him. "Honey how about you just get what she's getting."
He looks over at me and smiles. "Sure...I will have what she is having."
Tabitha walks off and he continues to stare at me. "What?" I feel like I must have something on my face or maybe something in my hair.
"Uhm...what did I just order?" he laughs.
"You will see." I said smiling back at him.
She comes back over and sits down two extra thick chocolate shakes, so thick that you almost need a spoon. Why because it has to be that thick...not soft...not runny like soup. I have to have it thick or I will start gagging, which means I have to eat it fast because as we all know ice cream melts fast. If he only knew how long it took me to even try this...years of feeding therapy.
"Chocolate...really?" He smiles but takes a sip anyway. "Dear lord it's so freaking thick. How do you drink it this way?"
I smile back and take the straw out and use the little spoon on the other end to eat it like ice cream. He watches me and then copies me. He puts his back into the glass and takes a deep breath. He looks around and then back at me. "So I want to know something?"
"What?" I take another bite.
"Why do you keep ignoring me?"
I feel my heart start to race and I know my cheeks are starting to turn shades of red. "I...I...I." I take a deep breath. "I just don't know how to talk to people...especially...uhm...boys...boys like you." I place my face in my hands to hide from him.
I feel his hand touch mine. "Hey, don't be shy it's just me."
I slightly cringe by his touch. I don'tmean to, it's just that no ever touches me. "Exactly...duh...boys like you don't talk to girls like me."
"Why not?" He takes my hand so that he can see my face. My hand stiffens up; I can feel every little nerve in my body go to that one spot.
"I don't know...I'm just different you wouldn't understand." I quickly pull away from him.
He smiles again. "Try me."
