"I came up with this but if anyone wants to make any changes feel free to do so," I said before reading out the first scene of the play I had worked on the previous night. Upon finishing there was a thunderous applause from everyone...everyone except Paige Lowski. She glared at me.
"That's actually an amazing start!" Dale commented. This took me by surprise... DALE BRYCE talked to me! Well, more like commented on something I, Kristina Bulero did.
Dale Bryce was Sanders High's diamond... he was priceless! He had several trophies for being the best player during the football seasons; which just so happened to be the coolest sport in the school. He had the looks and I'd give him an eleven out of ten. He was an amazing actor; I'd seen his skills previously during practise. He was also the homecoming king in last year's prom alongside queen Sanders high, or as I'd call it, demoness of Sanders High, Paige Lowski. Lindsey had updated me because this happened the previous year, before I landed in Sanders High.
Paige approached me.
"Why is the main actress black?" She asked, squinting her eyes at me.
"Because that's how we'll get to bring out the theme. A white boy and a black girl."
"I think you want to play that part." She said.
"Uh...I didn't mean to imply that..."
"I'm watching you Kristina," she walked away. I shrugged to shake off the negative energy. Besides, the others liked it and this made me happy. It didn't really matter to me who would take the main role.
"I expect more from you," Mr. Paisely said, "Keep this up and you might be the best script writer this year!"
Best script writer? Wait, they give awards for that? This is amazing! My motivation just went up to a whole new level! I have to get this for my empty award cabinet.
"We will start acting scene one tomorrow," Mr. Paisley interrupted my fantasy of holding the trophy for the best script writer, "As you all know you are going to vote for the person you think is fit for each role before we start tomorrow."
"But Mr. Paisely I don't think it's fair. Don't you see? She wants the role all to herself!" Paige protested pointing at me, "I mean why did the girl have to be black? Why couldn't the boy be black huh?"
"Paige silence," Mr. Paisley said before Paige could continue, "First of all we have five black girls in this club so I differ with your accusations. You know this is how we do it every year. That's why we are at the top. The other students identify your potential because they know what you are capable of. There can always be a change of roles depending on the votes of the other members. Is that okay?" He asked Paige.
"It is." She replied unsatisfactorily.
"You may all leave then." I put the script in my bag and sluggishly walked to the parking spot my dad liked. I didn't have violin class.
"Hey. It's Kristie right?" A voice called behind me. I turned to see who it was and to my surprise it was Dale! My heart skipped a beat upon seeing him. I wanted to look around to see if there was another Kristie but I would look ridiculous doing it.
"Uh... hi," I said in my least surprised tone.
"Congratulations for being the script writer this year. I must say the storyline is captivating." he said, "I'm Dale by the way," Of course I knew who he was...he is Dale Bryce!
"Thanks I actually write a lot," I said trying to get comfortable with the conversation. I was having an actual conversation with Dale Bryce!
"Can't wait for the next scene. See you later," he ended the conversation as he headed off to his friends.
"Okay! Bye!" By this time he was so far I don't even think he heard me. "We're making progress Kristie," I told myself.
"Kristie!" Lindsey called out to me, waving before approaching me. "I haven't seen you all day but now I can guess why," she said looking at Dale who was laughing with Pete and Dante.
"Whaaat? No... I've just been busy with the play. Writing a script isn't easy you know," I said defensively.
"Mmh...right" she said sarcastically then winked at me.
"Lindsey I'm serious! "
"okay fine," she chuckled, "I have good news too!"
"What do you mean 'too'?"
"Listen! My class is going for a trip to...wait for it...Africa!" She shouted almost bursting my ear drums.
"You do realize Africa has 55 countries, it's not one big country," I said rolling my eyes.
"Fine, we're going to Egypt!" This was even louder than the previous one.
"Wow Egypt...with pyramids and mummies and everything! But why your class specifically?"
"Well its three of the top students and I just so happen to be among them. This is going to be amazing!" She said jumping around like an electric bunny.
"Wow! I'm so happy for you!! When will you be going?"
"In five months," She said, "I have to go prepare."
"It's in five months Lindsey ," I said trying not to sound too obvious.
"I know!" She said without a care.
"My dad's here. You should say hi before you go." Lindsey was the only person my dad knew from Sanders high. He approved of her because she was smart, responsible, obedient... let's just say she was the perfect child.
"Hello Mr. Opondo," she said in her innocent voice.
"Hello Lindsey," My dad replied. "You seem quite happy today," he acknowledged.
"Lindsey's going to Egypt!" I couldn't help but tell him. "She is the best performer."
"Actually second best." Lindsey said.
"Egypt you say! You'll have a great time there just don't steal from the mummies. They'll follow you for eternity,"
"Dad, not now," I said as I got into the car."
"I'll have you know that it's a fact. Also, the Sun in Africa is too hot, avoid it," he said before starting the car.
"Why does he get to say Africa?" Lindsey asked looking at me. I looked at her with my 'we're-not-doing- this-right-now' look before my dad drove off.
