Kanda wasn't the type to deliberately go about looking for useless information, specifically a birthday. However, he still overheard it.
"Hey Komui. When's our cousin's birthday? Does anyone know?" Lenalee asked Komui one day while they sat at the table for lunch, Kanda sitting at one just in front of them.
"Eh? Well, no one knows precisely when, not even herself. However, if you're referring to when our uncle Tomison adopted her, that was on a fateful January 7th," Komui explained. Without meaning to, Kanda thought this over.
That's tomorrow. I don't have any plans for that day, but maybe..
Realizing that he was thinking about making plans he shook his head, eating his soba noodles before letting out a well deserved "che."
Meanwhile, Naomi, the exorcist who's birthday was nearly around was thinking up every possible excuse not to leave. She paced back in forth through her room, the floor littered with papers about dream theory, mixed in with excuses not to leave her room at all tomorrow.
Maybe I can get injured. No, that'll be a last resort. I can just say I need to catch up on sleep. Ugh, I'd rather be locked in a room full of angry Allens than sleep. Why am I thinking about this of all things? I need to be doing more research! Research, research, research!
She sat down on the ground, getting out pen and paper. The sleep deprived teen finally passed out around three in the morning, in a sea of her papers. Naomi probably could've slept off the whole day had she not been sharply woken by a somewhat embarrassed Kanda at around five in the evening.
"Hey. Open up you slow turtle!"
Naomi groggily stood up, her face portraying how much sleep debt she had. However, she managed a boost of energy to get up, walking over to the door and very slowly opening it.
Kanda was at the other end, looking in much better condition than the one he came to see. He appeared to have had a good night's rest, and had been eating well lately. His complexion was a natural and healthy pale, and he wore a nicer outfit than his usual uniform business. On him he wore formal black dress pants with a belt, a white dress shirt that was tucked in, and he held over his shoulder the suit coat that went with it. The only thing that hadn't changed was his hair that was tied up per usual, and the permanent stern expression glued to his face.
"How many times have I told you to get out of this room? Baka," he barely resisted the urge to smack her upside the head, walking in her room. Kanda struggled through the piles of papers assorted all over the floor. "What the hell?"
Naomi was unfazed. "Something you needed?"
"Get dressed, we're going somewhere to eat, there's no way I'll let you stay in here and starve yourself to death."
Naomi groaned, burying herself in the ocean of notes. "You figured it out didn't you? Who told you? Lenalee? I bet you it was the sister complex Komui."
"I have a simple deal," he proposed, sitting down on the edge of her bed. "They're planning on forcing you out for your birthday in about two hours. Maybe less. You can stay here and get forced out or," he held out his hand to her. "You can come with me."
She raised an eyebrow suspiciously. "What's the catch?"
"No catch," he convinced.
"There's a catch," she deadpanned.
"Look there's no catch. So hurry up and make up your mind before I change mine."
Naomi considered this. All she really had to do was hangout with the anti-social samurai over the insanity of being taken out of her room and likely be forced to celebrate a day she considered dull.
