*A little less than a year before Kaya's untimely demise...*
"What's for lunch today?" Kagame asked, yawning sleepily. Her fatigue was practically radiating off her body, she was so tired. It was this way everyday, however, so Kagome was used to it.
"Curry bread," Kagome answered, "and no, it's not gluten free."
"Damn," Kagame sighed, sliding her eyes to look out the window. "I guess I'll just miss lunch today...again."
"Kagame-san," one of the boys, Kimori-kun, came up shyly. "You can have my lunch if you want. My Kaa-chan's trying to make us all vegetarian, so..."
"Hontoni?*" Kagame looked up at the bashful boy, pretending to not notice that he was blushing a lot. "Arigatou! I'll pay you back for this, Kimura-kun!"
"Kimori-san..." Kagome sighed, looking over her glasses at her best friend of twelve years And wondering why she couldn't even bother to get his name right. Why they were friends even while being polar opposites, she never knew. What they did know, however, was that they were closer than regular sisters. Why? Don't ask. "And will you really pay him back? You know that Valetine's day is tomorrow, so he was probably waiting for an opportunity like this. You'll have to give him obligatory chocolates if you really want to pay him back."
"But I don't know how to make chocolate," Kagame grinned slyly with an easy expression on her face, fighting back an ungraceful yawn. She didn't want to keep ruining her complexion with how many times she yawned a day, she still had to go to work after school. There was a photo shoot waiting for her with some debutante trying to make her way up in the world, so she was going for a magazine cover for her first introduction. Not that Kagame cared, since she'd been modeling for so long she didn't even care anymore. The faces, all of them very pretty, came and went. There was no need to keep them in mind. "Want to teach me?"
"Nope," Kagome turned her head away, hair swishing in her face as she propped up her glasses again, burying herself in a book. "Kaya can do that, she's the best at it. See if she can head over to your house today."
"Eh? But she has after-school programs to get to, like juku*," Kagame pouted cutely, making whoever was watching gasp. "I doubt she'll be able to, with her busy schedule."
"Busier than the lazy Matsumoto in front of me, that's for sure," Nakamura Kagome rolled her eyes, looking at the Matsumoto Kagame who turned around and began lazing on her desk, taking up most of the space. Kagome's lunch almost got knocked off, which she promptly saved by packaging it and putting it back in her desk. Nonchalantly, she went on, "Say...I think Takuya would be willing to have you over. I'm sure he'll be making some chocolates again for us this year, and if we're lucky, maybe he'll finally confess to Kaya."
"Ohhhhh, I'm so gonna go," Kagame's black eyes went wide open and she sat up, grasping the cuffs of her sleeve. "Finally, some honmei-choco* instead of giri...even though he's supposed to wait until White Day, but I don't care at this point. Show me romance!"
"It's just a guess. We're already in middle school and we've been with her for how long? Takuya has to make his freaking decision before someone else decides to confess," the one holding the book suddenly squeezed it tightly, nose crinkling in dissatisfaction. "Kaya may be a dork sometimes, but she's the epitome of perfection. Low key beauty of the school, as you might say. It's a wonder how she hasn't been confessed to until now..."
"Please, we both know," Kagame laughed, running her hand through her hair, showing off a bit for the boys watching from the front of the classroom. They were towards the back, by the door. Even though she wasn't looking at them, she knew they were looking at her. Who wouldn't when she's one of the few female students that decided to break dress code and where her uniform like...that? Yes, that. Kagome wouldn't be surprised if she saw Kagame in Harajuku one day. "Everyone knows that although she may be smart intellectually, socially she's a total dunce."
