Both Chris and Jack froze. Not good news... the pair's hearts began to race and Chris wanted to scream. He wanted to shout that whoever it was playing this cruel joke should come out from their hiding spot right now. From the look on the doctors face, it was not going to happen.
The doctor looked down at her iPad once more and turned back to the two men. "Her breathing isn't how it's supposed to be. It's much shallower than any other girls' of her age. We had our suspicions and from other testing which we have done, the next step we need to take a is for Dorothy to have a scan. From there we will be able to conclude the final result. I have booked a scanning session for a little whiles time, another doctor will come in and prepare her."
Chris nodded his head and let the doctor pass him. Instantly, his back slumped against the wall and his hands tugged at the roots of his hair. Jack stood beside him, placing his hands on his shoulder. "It'll be alright, Chris, this is Dotty we're talking about," he said to the man.
Chris shook his head, "This has never happened before! Clearly, something is wrong!"
Jack brought the man into his arms and Chris clung to Jack. Jack couldn't imagine how Chris was feeling right then, in fact, he could assume that it was ripping him apart. He too hated the feeling in his gut about the situation. Dotty, a little sister to him, probably having something so badly wrong with her. He hated this.
After a few moments, the two men broke apart and made their way back to Andrew and Dotty who were still chatting away, clearly, nobody had said anything to them yet. Dotty looked up at her father when Chris sat beside her and brushed her hair back with his fingers. "What's going on?" Dotty asked her father, "You look upset."
Chris kissed her head, "A doctor is going to come in and they're going to get you prepped. Darling, you're going to have a scan."
Andrew made eye contact with Jack wh0o signalled that they would talk in a moment.
"A scan?" questioned Dotty quietly, "why?"
Chris kissed her head again, "just to check some stuff, Dotty, okay?"
A doctor entered just as Chris finished his sentence, she spoke kindly to Dotty and explained some things that would be happening. Next thing they knew some porters came in and wheeled Dotty in a wheelchair to the room where she would be having a scan.

After an hour having a full body scan which Dotty had fallen asleep during, she was wheeled back into the hospital room where she woke up from the sound of some wires being plugged back in. Her eyes took a short while to adjust to the harsh lighting, and her hand groped the air as she tried to find her father. "Dad?" She called out, squinting her eyes as they hurt, "dad?"
Chris grasped her hand, "it's okay, darling, I'm here," he gushed her, placing a kiss to her head.
"Is mum coming? Is she here?" Dotty asked, as her eyes fully opening.
Chris shook his head, "she's still at home, where you will be too, cooped up in bed watching some films and writing. Okay?"
Chris hoped and prayed that what he had told his daughter would be true. That soon they will on their way home, safe and sound.
"Hey, stripey, you'll be okay," Jack told her, "and when your dad lets you off of bed rest, I will come visit and see if the other lads can and we'll all have a lovely catch up. How about that, eh?"
Dotty nodded her head, "I really want that." Jack and she locked eyes and slowly but surely, Dotty raised her fist to her lips and blew threw the tiny hole.
Jack rolled his eyes and leaned forward, his head between his knees. "You've got to be kidding me," he sighed making Dotty giggle.
For a while Jack was sat like that until Chris flicked his ear allowing him to sit up, "once you start you'll never stop," Dotty smiled, "just like the good old days in 1940."
"Ah, yes, on the shores of Dunkirk." Jack sighed in contentment. "I haven't changed in seventy six years!"
After a little bit, Andrew had to go home but traded numbers with Dotty after getting on so well. Chris sat back and watched as Jack distracted his daughter as they awaited to hear the news on her scan.
It was a long wait, painful for Christopher who was not able to seek distraction as his knees bobbed up and down and his hands shook. Him and Emma struggled to have children so they turned to adoption. Dotty brought a light into their lives which could never be replaced. She is their happiness, their reason waking up in the morning and the thought that this scan could tell him that he could lose his baby, was killing him.
The doctor and a fellow doctor finally returned. Their faces did not show any tell-tale signs of what they were about to disclose. Dotty's smile faded as she gripped onto Jack's hand for comfort na shelf her father's in fear. She braced herself for why was about to come, a feeling in her gut telling her that it definitely was bad.
The original doctor stepped forward, looking at the young girl who was hooked up to wires and holding tightly onto her father and the man who is one of her many brothers.
"I'm afraid that our predictions were correct," she began, her accent thick with sorrow, "Dorothy has in fact got a type of heart disease and if it was not for your...mishap last night we might not have found it in the early stage it is in right now. There is treatment for it, including an operation however, for now we will use medication that you will need to take three times a day. We have also contacted your local hospital who will be contacting you as to when you will need to go in for a check up. As for now, you're free to go."
Christopher's heart dropped, "is it fatal?" He asked glancing at Dotty who buried her head into Jack's shoulder.
The other doctor spoke, "there is of course the risk of dying, however, with this treatment and further treatment she will get from your local hospital, the risk is reduced by a fair amount."
The doctors went into more detail about the symptoms, what medication Dotty would be getting and and what it will do. They ask answered all of the questions they all had. Once everything was clear, Dotty was signed out.
"You'll be okay, stripes," Jack whispered into her ear as they said goodbye, "I'll visit soon and will call you all of the time. Let me know when yer home, alright?"
Dotty nodded, "I will. Thank you again, and thank Andrew too. I owe you guys so much."
"No yer don't, but I will, darling." Jack kissed the top of her head and hugged Chris goodbye.
The two walked away from Jack who had dropped them off at the airport. With that Dotty and Chris left Scotland and returned to London where Emma was freaking out at home still unaware of what was going on. So was Fionn.
