"that'll be $7.50" the young woman at the register boredly states. I fish my wallet out of my pocket and hand over the money begrudgingly. I slipped over a ten dollar bill before sliding my wallet in my back pocket where it originally was.
"Keep the change," I say, snatching the bag of damp flowers off the counter. Girls liked roses, right?
I figured it would be a big enough thank you to Harley since she got me Rae back. If it wasn't for her, I wouldn't be as happy as I was now, I wouldn't have gave myself to her completely, I would've had to force myself to have fallen out of love with someone that mean so much to me.
I didn't think Harley was the girliest, she was a bit rude and boyish, a bit creepy even, but I just had to hope that she would appreciate it. Roses couldn't be that bad.
The cold air welcomes my face as I step out of the cheap drug store, the sent of roses filling my nostrils as the wind blew the strong smell into my face. The leather jacket had a warm coat of fur on the inside, so with my free hand, I zipped it up and huddled my face into it even more.
It got colder and colder each day, almost being December. I hadn't even caught up on what day it was, but I sometimes forget how close to Christmas we were.
Would I get Rae something? Would she get me something? I already had to pay her back for the jacket, now I have to think about another present. I didn't want to be that asshole who got their girlfriend a teddy bear each year, or some charm bracelet bullshit, so I didn't exactly know.
After skimming through my thoughts, I noticed I didn't even know where Harley lived. She could be homeless for all in knew. I could ask her for her address or something, but I didn't even have her number. I needed to make friends with her soon. Thought it wouldn't help Cal out one bit, I needed to have a friendship with her for Rae.
I whipped out my phone, resting the small bouquet of roses on the sidewalk. Along with that, I sat down against the fence that guarded around the Wallgreens, dialing Rae's number.
I knew it by heart by now, which was a bit pathetic, but it came in handy. After three or four rings, I eventually heard the girl's voice coming through the other end,
"Hey." She says, blankly.
"Hey, you know where Harley lives, right?" I question, a smile popping on my face after hearing her voice.
Rae gives me clear directions to Harley's house, which I can barely even hear in the first place, listening to my own thoughts more than the words she was putting in my ear. But I found myself multitasking, listening to both at the same time.
I listened to her voice, the way I could just tell that she had a smug smile on her face as well. I could just imagine her in her room, flipping through a nerdy book while listening to some shitty rock band we both enjoyed. I liked to think of Rae like this, not crying and sad like she sometimes was, how I usually found her.
"Alright, so Spring street? I think I know where that is.." I ramble on, latching my hand onto the roses once again, before standing up and looking both way to tell myself which direction it was in. I'd like to think I knew my way around this town pretty well.
"Yeah, 205, Spring street, you got that?" She says impatiently.
"A bit feisty, yeah?" I chuckle through the phone, as well as her.
"I have to do the dishes, so I got to go, ashton!" She says, something between a whisper and a yell.
"Okay, okay!" I surrender.
After that, we both say our goodbyes before hanging up, and I walk down the familiar sidewalk from down town. Spring street was made up of town houses, so I hoped I wouldn't get confused between the houses. they all sort of looked the same.
