Both Eric and his father couldn't believe their ears. They knew that one day they would hear that name again but it still came as a shock to them. Damien was and always had been a sore subject between him and his father. To Eric, Damien had been a reminder of his father's infidelity to his mother, and to Eric's father, Damien was the result of one stupid night with another woman who wasn't his wife. When Eric and Damien first met, when Eric was twelve and Damien was ten, they disliked each other and always competed in everything against each other. Soon they began to act as true brothers did.
Everyone could tell that they weren't full blooded brothers. Damien had inherited his mother's light brown hair and even lighter brown eyes. The only thing he inherited from their father was his tall height and broad shoulders and muscular build. But even with their differences they became close. Soon it was time to announce Eric as the future Head Alpha. That was when the trouble began.
Once Damien realized the position would never be his because of his bastard status, their relationship changed. Eric wished it had changed for the better but unfortunately it didn't. Soon it was no longer a competition to see who the best at everything was, instead it was about who could rule the pack the best. When the pack had finally made it clear to him that no matter how powerful Damien could get he would never become the Head Alpha for as long as they lived. That was when the problems started.
Over time Eric began to notice that many of the lesser pack members had become quieter and some of the even had bruises. He questioned everyone about what happened to them he was always met with silence. It wasn't until one of the braver children had told him that it was in fact his own brother that had done that to them when they refused to turn their backs on the pack and swear allegiance to him. Eric refused to believe them but went to question Damien about it. He arrived at Damien's apartment to find that Damien was gone and a letter had been left in his place.
Eric could still remember what was written:
Dear Eric, Father, and the Elders
For years I have been in my brother's shadow because I was born a bastard, something for which I had no control of. All I asked for was for a chance to show that I too could be fit to rule the pack. But you all denied me. Eric as my only brother you should have fought father and the rest of the pack to give me a chance. But you were too much of a coward, I bet you feared that one day I would beat you and the pack would be mine. Father, you were no better, after you fought mom to keep me with you I thought you cared but obviously I was wrong. You only wanted me to serve as a guard to Eric in case someone tried to hurt him. I bet you didn't know that Eric, Huh? You were so lost in your world you never knew how father truly viewed me. But neither of you were worse than the Elders. They always spouted bullshit about how they always want to do what's best for the pack. What a bunch of hypocrites! The only thing they care about is how pure the blood of the person ruling is. But I bet you are all wondering how if it was me who hurt fellow members of the pack, yes it was. If I had more time I would have did more. But I need more forces. When I am at your level Eric I will be back.
Damien
That had been close to seven years ago and the pain was still fresh in Eric's heart. Damien was the reason why Eric was the way he was today. Anyone who had known him before the incident could say that he was warm and loving. Now everyone called him cold and unforgiving towards anyone. Everyone wished for the moment when he would find a female of the pack to mate with, at least then he would be more focused on his mate and the pack would no longer be scared to even breathe the air around him.
It took Eric a moment to realize that his father had been trying to get his attention for the last few minutes. "I'm sorry father; I was lost in thought about something."
"I can see that, I was merely telling you that I'm holding an emergency pack meeting tomorrow night at the main pack house to warn them all to be on the lookout for Damien," his father sighed before getting up, "I'll meet you at the pack house." With those words his father left.
Eric turned to Josie and said, "Cancel all meetings and appointments I have today and I want you to contact all currently out of state pack members and inform them of the emergency pack meeting tomorrow."
"Alright Sir, consider it done," with that project in mind Josie left.
Eric could only say the only thing on his mind, "Damn."
