Maddox had ditched school, he didn't want to see Arabella or even hear her name because he was not in the correct state of mind to handle anything that could potentially set him off.
Instead, he was wandering down the rainy streets of Downtown Seattle with his head hung low and both his hands stuffed in the front pocket of his hoodie.
His phone had been ringing nonstop, so he turned it off. It was either his mom or dad, probably calling to shout at him for ditching school and to ask him where he was.
Maddox walked by his father's company, not even sparing a looking glance at the large and tall building that was only a few feet away from him.
Nonetheless, Maddox carried on with little to no interest, his life a swirl of confusion and emptiness. He wanted to know how long he had been this way and what made him finally shut down.
Maddox walked and walked and walked and walked.
His legs instinctively carried him as far as they could to a destination where only he knew about whenever he would go off on his own to walk a trail.
The sky was already beginning to darken, and the raindrops that were falling were getting heavier as well.
Maddox had found his destination, a large and secluded forest with a trail.
The bottoms of his sneakers were slipping on the mud and jagged wet rocks beneath him, and his hands were gripping tightly onto the safety rail behind him.
He was staring into the dark ravine before and below him, where he could no longer see anything of the forest yet he could still hear the quick rush of water hitting the jagged edges of the ravine.
The gorge looked just like his mind had been feeling. Dark and bottomless.
Maddox licked the raindrops from his lower lip and let go of the bar that was partially helping him from plunging to his death.
He stood amongst the ledge with the cold air, and it was making his body shiver.
One wrong move, or one right move, and Maddox Reign knew that his life would cease to exist.
He made his way there for that decision, to stop the feeling of nothing but while he stood there with his mind telling him to do it, he thought about his mom.
His only hand on the rail behind him tightened, and he lowered his head.
Maddox let out a loud, loud yell that was lost in the atmosphere due to the sound of the roaring water below.
Breathing heavy and fighting his mentality, Maddox let go of the rail. He shuffled and then peered over into the dark gorge and began to count backward from 10.
