Another four days had gone past without a single word from Gannicus since he had lost Attius. He would avoid me in the streets whenever he would see me, it was torment on its own. He had hurt me by sleeping with Saxa and other women, I was willing to forgive him for the deed and yet now I was the one being yet again punished for the acts of others. Sibyl constantly would tell me that a man who was capable of causing so much pain was really no man at all. Yet my heart still yearned for him, with each passing moment. I sat at the gates while while Donar and my were there to greet them with passage into the city, telling those who seemed trainable to head one way and others to the lower parts of the city.
Crixus and Naevia were growing more and more hungry for the blood of Romans and often spoke through the night of leaving the city and our army with their own to face up against the Romans. Crassus would be here sooner or later, they and their followers seemed the only ones truly ready to lose their lives in battle. I sat there sharpening the end of a piece of wood trying to clear my mind of all that was going on around me when Spartacus soon joined us at the gate alongside Crixus and Naevia.
"Jana." He spoke motioning for me to move closer to them, "As I told Naevia earlier, they just keep coming, it is a miracle they even made it here with Crassus army as close as it is." I mentioned as she nodded.
I looked over at Agron, "My brother and Donar are doing their best with this mess." I motioned behind me as Nemetes slowly walked out from one of the buildings nearby. "It has been like this since the sun rose this morning." He remarked as Spartacus nodded slowly.
"If you hold weapons you must give over before entering city!" I could hear Agron shout over the clambering of the people. "We've collected quite the number of weapons too, I am honestly curious how it is slaves managed to procure them." Nemetes added.
I let out a heavy breath as I watched Nasir and Agron together, heart swelled at the sight of my brother so happy and yet in seeing such happiness I quickly realized how drained of such emotion I was. "Spartacus!" I heard Agron call out as he walked towards us causing me to turn around seeing him moving towards us with a younger woman in hand and Gannicus following behind them both. Luckily Saxa was nowhere to be seen, from word of others they two had become nearly inseparable over the past few days.
"This one carries knowledge of Crassus' army." He told us as I slapped his hand from her arm scowling at him as I smiled to her, "You are safe here." I told her as she nodded to me reassuringly. "I say about a half day's march from our walls." He told us.
"How great a force?" Spartacus asked her as I just stood there my eyes on Gannicus, we were both looking to each other and yet he refused still to speak to me as if I had done wrong. I could feel the heat slowly growing within my eyes. "Larger than fucking city by her word." Agron spoke for her. "Yet he has made camp and holds advance."
"Why stay hand when it grips such numbers?" Naevia questioned. "He is planning something, that could be the only reason. Or the boy who lead that charge... that boy could very well be his child." I remarked as Naevia stared at me. "Pray to the gods it is not." She commented knowing what I had done during the fight.
"Well if it was the boy, me offering help that day could be the reason they wait... for him to heal." I commented as she nodded, "Giving us time to grow our ranks..." She told me as we both looked to Spartacus.
