"Ah!" I yelled.
The shadow covered my mouth with its shadowy hand, and I shivered. Its cold hand. Against my warm skin.
I was afraid for my life.
It looked into my eyes with its own red eyes as if it wanted to suck the life out of me.
"Mmm?" Hold on for a second.
I squinted to get a better view of its eyes and came to a sudden realization.
The eyes were not red. They were green.
Then I came to another realization.
The shadowy hand was not cold. It felt warm.
The shadow slowly pulled its hand away from my mouth and put a finger to its face. I think that it was putting its finger over its lips, although I could not see the lips. It was telling me to be quiet.
Why? Was it going to do something terrible to me? Like forcing me to solve math problems or destroy my fan mail?
"G-go away," I whispered as I hugged my legs. "I just had a nightmare, and I still need to catch my beauty sleep." I yawned. "I am tired."
The shadowy figure did not move. It stayed where it was, its green eyes locking themselves on me.
"Please? I have had a rough day. My bus got in a crash, a friend of mine died, and a shadow almost killed me."
Why was I acting calm in front of this shadow? I was not calm when I met that other shadow.
It still did not move.
I growled in frustration. "Look, if you are here to end me, then could you at least wait until tomorrow? My dad is still debating whether or not I should go to school, but we will meet again sometime tomorrow. I guarantee."
The figure tilted its head to the floor. A few seconds passed, and the shadow walked out of my room.
Finally. The shadow was gone...
...or so I thought.
It stood in the doorway and stared at me some more.
Oh, come on! Seriously?!
I motioned for it to go away.
"Shoo! Go!"
"Shush!" it shushed at me.
"Do not tell me to shush!"
It then motioned with a hand. I think that it wanted me to follow it.
"Uh-uh!" I said quietly. "There is no way that I am coming with you! You will hurt me!"
The mysterious figure slapped its hand against its head. I believe that it was facepalming.
"Yeah! That is how I feel, buddy! Now leave me alone!"
The shadow turned and started walking down the hallway.
Oh my gosh. Is it actually leaving?
I quickly got out of bed and hurried to my doorway. I poked my head out and glared at the hall. I looked down the left.
Nope. No shadow.
I looked down the right.
And I let out a small gasp.
I noticed the shadow, and it was walking up the stairs to the attic.
Wait. I closed the entrance to the attic.
Did I not?
If I did, which I am sure of it, then the shadow must have pulled the pull chain, causing the staircase to appear.
But if that were the case, then why did I not hear any noises, especially sounds coming from the staircase, when the figure pulled down on the pull chain?
I yawned again and glanced at my bed. I wanted to go back to sleep and pretend that what just happened was all an illusion.
I glanced back at the staircase.
But this figure was not an illusion. It was not a part of my imagination.
It was real.
And I had a feeling in the pit of my stomach that it was up to no good.
I needed to find out what it was planning to do.
Carefully, I went up the stairs, trying my hardest to not make a creaking sound. I got to the top and found myself in the attic once again. I immediately spotted the shadow and dashed behind some boxes. I slowly lifted my head.
There. The shadow.
Its body was facing the mirror that the other shadow had showed me.
Nerquina, was it?
"It must be going home," I said to myself. "Goodbye and good riddance."
All of a sudden, a shadow stepped out of the mirror. This shadow was a bit shorter than the other one, and its red eyes bulged.
"What are you doing here?" the shorter shadow questioned.
I recognized that voice.
It was the shadow who planned on killing me earlier!
"You are not hurting him, Katherine," the taller shadow responded. "Not on my watch."
Were they talking about...me?
"He will die tonight," Katherine sneered. "And there is nothing that you can do about it."
"Not if I take you to the shadow realm and keep you there!" The tall shadow grabbed the short shadow and shoved her in the mirror. The remaining shadow looked around the attic and said, "I know that you are here. Nigel." It leaped into the mirror and disappeared.
A shiver went down my spine. I did not know what to say, except "What the heck just happened?"
