"Thank goodness that you have arrived." My dad and the doctor shook hands. "Say, I have not seen you at the doctor's office. Are you new?"

Dr. Maxwell chuckled. "Not exactly. I do work for that specific office, the only doctor's place in Forlot. However, I work behind the scenes."

"Really? What is your job?"

"I run tests."

"Like DNA tests?"

"Yes, and other forms of testing."

Dad placed his hands on his hips. "You do testing in that small office?"

The doctor shook his head. "No. I have to work in secret."

Secret? What did he mean by that?

Before Dad had a chance to respond, Dr. Maxwell spoke.

"Where is your son?"

I was standing behind my dad. He stepped out of the way and motioned Dr. Maxwell to me. I got a better view of Maxwell.

He seemed fairly young, like he was in his twenties or thirties. He wore a lab coat and was holding a black suitcase in his right hand.

He glared at me and smirked. "Hello, Nigel," he said. He ruffled my hair.

I growled. "Could you please not do that?" I asked politely.

"What? I am trying to lighten the mood." The doctor fixed some parts of my hair. "Your father and I talked on the phone. I am very sorry that yesterday turned out to be a nightmare."

"Except that it was a nightmare that came true," I muttered under my breath.

Dr. Maxwell turned to my dad. "May I come in?"

"Depends," Dad replied, crossing his arms. "Are you positive that your technique will work on my son? Because I want him to stop having the dreams as soon as possible."

He nodded. "I guarantee. I have seen these cases."

"Hold it. So I am not the only person who is having these dreams?" I said.

"Nope. And you will not be the last."

I gulped at his last statement. It gave me the chills.

Dr. Maxwell stepped into the house and walked into the living room. "I will set up in here," he informed us. "It will be a perfect spot to help Nigel. Just give me a couple of minutes."

"Will do," Dad responded. "How long will the procedure take?"

"Eh, I am estimating four to five minutes. It should not take more than ten minutes though."

"Okay, good. Anything to help my son." He looked at me. "I wanted you to get dressed in time for your appointment, but seeing that he arrived earlier than expected and saw you in your pjs, I will let you stay in your pjs."

I nodded and hugged him. "I am sorry that I upset you," I apologized.

"No, Nigel, it is my fault. You had a difficult day yesterday, and you were pretty stressed. I also cannot force you to stop mentioning your mother. I know that you miss her as much as I do."

"I wish that she was still with us."

"Me too." My dad hugged me back. "I have arranged a time tomorrow for us to visit Maxine's parents. They are going through something rough. Losing their daughter at such a young age and all."

"We know how they feel. Losing somebody very valuable in a person's life."

"Which is why we are going to help them. We have been through the grieving stage, and we are grieving even to this day."

I sniffed. "Yes, Dad."

"And you can give them Maxine's necklace."

My eyes widened. My face turned pale.

"You have Maxine's necklace. Right?"

"Uh..."

Crub, crub, crub! I totally forgot about her necklace! And gave it to the shadow who pretended to be Maxine!

I am such an idiot!

"Nigel, are you alright?" Dad asked.

"Oh..." I moaned. I held my head, and my vision became blurry.

"Nigel?"

I did not answer him. I lost my balance and fell.

Plunging into darkness.
