"Huh?!" I turned my head. A figure was standing at the other end of the attic.

"Nigel?" the figure said. "What the heck are you doing?"

"Oh, no," I moaned when I realized who it was.

What could be worse than a shadow desiring to kill you?

Nell, that is what.

Nell appeared from the darkness of the room. Her arms were crossed, and her eyebrows narrowed. She had her hair tied in a ponytail and was wearing her cheerleader outfit and white sneakers.

"Why the long face?" she questioned.

I frowned. She was worse than the shadow!

"What are you doing here?" I asked in a firm voice. "How did you get inside? I locked the front door."

"But not the back door." Nell ran her fingers through her ponytail. "It was unlocked."

"...oh."

"You really should do a better job at securing your house. You do not want riffraff."

I muttered under my breath. "Like you."

The cheerleader circled around me. "Why are you in such a strange position?" she wondered. "Like a lion ready to pounce?"

Comparing me to a lion? Does she not see that a shadow has gotten ahold of me?

I looked back at the shadow - and became shocked.

The shadow was gone.
