Chapter Forty-One

"Um..." I could not say anything else. I was too petrified.

I shuddered and hugged myself as I kept my eyes on the shadow who had appeared in front of me.

The shadow was standing up, and its arms were to the sides. It locked its bright, green eyes on me.

Studying me.

Watching my every move.

I lowered my head and whimpered, and I felt somebody ruffling my hair. I tilted my head back up and saw the shadow pulling back its shadowy hand.

Did...did the shadow just ruffle my hair?

I let out a growl. "Hey, there was no need for that," I said softly. "I hate when people mess with my hair. It takes hours for me to comb it perfectly!"

The shadow giggled.

Giggled?

I narrowed my eyebrows. "It is not funny."

It giggled some more and patted the top of my head. I grabbed its hand and pushed it away.

"Do not touch me."

A thin, white line spread across her face. It looked to be a smile.

"Uh, quit the smiling," I said. "You have a very creepy smile."

Its smile disappeared as soon as I stated that, and it leaned towards me, reaching for me.

"No! Stay back!"

The shadow did not heed my negative request. I tried swatting at it, but it was not helping. It grabbed my wrists and, using its free hand, went in my left pocket and pulled out two things.

The box of matches and a shadowy object that turned out to be a set of keys.

Hold on. How could I see the keys? They were shadows!

It put down the box and let go of my wrists. It gently kicked the box to me and made weird gestures. It pointed left and right. Right and left. Up and down. Down and up.

What the crub was it doing?

When the shadow was finished making the gestures, it placed a shadowy thumb on my forehead, and then walked off, its fingers playing with the keys that were in its left hand.

I sat there and collected my thoughts, trying to figure out what the heck just happened.

"What the heck was that?!" I yelled at the top of my lungs. "You are not going to end me?!"

"I will end you."

I gasped and spun in the direction where that voice came from.

And there was King Oberious.

An inch from me.

"I will end your life here and now, Nigel Sanders," Oberious said.
