Later, I was resting on the couch and staring up at the ceiling. I could not stop thinking about the last thing that Shade said to me before I came back to reality.

"I am responsible for the deaths of your mother and Maxine."

"I am responsible..."

"...for the deaths..."

"...of your mother and Maxine."

I hugged myself. I was not eager of him to visit my house.

And he was coming by today. In the afternoon. And it was already the afternoon.

"Well, I am off to work," Dad stated as he came into the living room. He smiled at me as he buttoned the last button on his white shirt. He then hugged me. "I am thankful for that doctor. He did the trick."

"Uh, D-Dad?" I piped in. I was too scared to speak correctly. "W-what did the doctor do that d-did the trick?"

"His machine."

"M-machine?"

"A small device of his. When you became unconscious, Dr. Maxwell used the opportunity to fix your dreams. Using the device, he altered the dreams, making them less terrifying."

I was surprised and a bit impressed at what my dad had to say. Though, I did not believe that the shadow dreams were out of my life just yet.

I hugged him back and was debating whether or not I should admit to my dad about my latest dream with Shade, when Dad interrupted my thinking.

"I should be on my way. I do not want to be late." He pulled away and patted my arm.

"Do you have to go?" I said. "Can you not stay with me?"

"I wish. But the company needs me. Besides, I will only be gone for two hours. No worries."

No worries? I sighed. If he knew of the pain and struggle that I was going through.

As Dad was walking out of the room and to the front door, I heard a loud, creaking sound.

Creak!

And then a slam.

Slam!

And then footsteps...

...making their way to the living room.
