Another Day in Town
Sweaty palms
Guts-a-churning
Ray was nervous
About the meeting
"Bring them breakfast."
AJ said
So he walked to the jail
With a basket in hand
Billy's at the desk,
Ray gave him his share
He then asked the deputy
If he could talk with Sol Sr.
"Go on, kid.
Talk to your pa."
Billy said as he
wolfed down his breakfast.
Sol was quiet
As his son approached his cell
When Ray gave him a muffin
He threw it at the wall.
"You're no son of mine."
"And you're no father to me.
I just want to know what happened
To Mama and Teddy."
The old man scoffed,
Eyes full of hate.
"What do you care about them, boy?
You ran away!"
Sol faced the wall,
Not uttering another word
Ray knew
Their talk was over
He was about to walk away
When someone started laughing
It was the other bandit
Who started talking
"I'm hurt, Ray"
The bandit sneered.
"Don't recognise me?
In just eight years?"
Ray froze,
Looked the bandit in the eye
