-Allison's POV-
I discretely clutched my hand under the table. It was a nervous reaction. Alfred frowned back at me at the otherside of the video chat screen. He thought, licking his lips for a moment, before saying "You don't think she was poisoned, do you?"
I frowned a little before giving him a tiny, dismissing look. "No, that only happens in the movies." I clutched my hand tighter. "I mean... I don't know how she'd even be poisoned, she prepared her own food..."
Alfred blinked, his sky blue eyes thoughtful and genuine. "Huh. Well, tell her I hope she gets better." I gave a tiny smile, appreciating it.
"I will. Thanks... I'll talk to you later, gotta go." We said our goodbyes and I ended the call. I wasn't exactly sure what to do now that Carter was in the hospital. She would only be there until morning... but things were boring when she wasn't there forcing me to play shitty horror games. America forcing me to play those same things wasn't the same.
As I got off the bus, I slipped the laptop into my bag and walked towards the house. The hot, summer air had receded by this time, so I knew that a short jog to the dark building from the bus stop wouldn't kill me.
When I got inside the silent house, I set the laptop on the table and turned on the light. The door behind me creaked, rapid footsteps pattering towards me. I turned around. "Mister-"
The lamp went out and a hand flew over my mouth. I almost let out a muffled scream until a familiar voice quickly silenced me. "Allison, calm down! It's me... just be silent!" I heard someone hiss. My previous suspicions about Kevin were resurfaced with a tearing shovel. Before I could wriggle free, I was shoved back in the closet behind me.
As he let go of me, I whipped around to meet the man with the scarlet eye. He was frowning as my brain reached for some explanation to all of this. "Break, are you insane?!" I hissed, rather exasperated.
The man seemed to realize something and looked down in dull irritation."Be quiet, we aren't alone," he muttered I'm a low tone. His face carried a seriousness that one would find hard to describe.
A seed of anxiety began to grow rapidly in the pit of my stomach. "Who's in the house...?" I trailed off as I heard footsteps a room away in the library.
The sudden horror that shot through me managed to keep me silent. Kevin's face was lit by the light wafting through the crack in the door. His one scarlet eye was narrowed with bitterness.
After what felt like years of sitting in a tight ball, I had realized I didn't hear anymore footsteps. Taking a deep breath, I listened for about thirty more seconds. "Break..." I whispered. "Is it...?"
Abruptly, Kevin pushed himself towards the door. I fell silent. "I'm going to check out the house. I highly doubt they are still here. They were upstairs for a good while before you got home." He creaked open the door and left me there. In the dark.
It was around that time that I started to realize something small and practically microscopic. Kevin Regnard certainly wasn't a man I or any sane person would consider normal. But there was something especially odd about him. Like he was hiding something.
I then thought back to his odd expression when we were in the closet waiting for the immediate danger to pass. It seemed to be kind of angry at the time, but I then knew that wasn't it. I had a slight feeling Kevin knew exactly what was going on.
But his expression...
The more I thought about it, the more I realizied that it seemed to be a mix of many different emotions. Anger, sure. Realization too. But there was something else...
Was that... pain, perhaps?
