About a month later, I walked down a busy New York Road after work. I never had really memorized the street names, as I was definitely a more visual person. I could usually look at the shops and remember where I was going... and my, were they unique! Everything was so colorful!
The smell of food wafting from all the different diners and chain restaurants were making me rather hungry. It reminded me that it had been a while since I had eaten. I glanced around at the restaurants in view, and chose a small cafe. Right after I sat down in the busy cafe, my cell phone vibrated. I pulled out the cheap black and green flip dubbed 'dumb phone'. The picture that appeared as the caller icon, was one of myself and Carter cosplaying.
I snapped out of my daydream, and answered the phone. "Yello?"
"Hey. I'm arriving at the building for my interview. Could you possibly still be there?"
I blanked out. "Wait... that was today?" I shook my head and hissed softly. We could have carpooled and saved gas money.
There was a pause. "You said you would get it scheduled today... I didn't drive five hours for nothing, right?"
"N-No, it's scheduled today, don't worry!" I assured my friend with an awkward laugh. "I just forgot, that's all."
Carter sighed with relief. "Okay, you had me worried there for a sec. Are you still there?"
I sighed. "No, sorry. I was about to get lunch."
"It's fine." Carter replied, with no lost optimism. I smiled a little more.
I tapped my forefinger onto the phone. "Hey, I can go look around for a bit, and we can meet at this cafe after your interview? I'll just grab a snack to tie me over and send you the address."
"Yeah, let's do it... I'm going in now, last minute advice?"
I pondered for a moment. "The guy interviewing you is my new boss. He is a lot like Xerxes Break, so just be yourself."
"...is that even a good thing?"
"Nope." I ended the call, chuckling softly. Alright, time to explore.
I wasn't going to be doing especially much shopping, I had realized. The shops were mostly incredibly superficial and overpriced, so nothing interesting there. Most of the clothes were the same things you could find elsewhere, maybe a bit more expensive because they carried a brand name.
But I did find a Hot Topic. Walking inside, I looked around for a bit before grabbing two slightly overpriced shirts and bought them. When I stepped outside, I realized I had been shopping for forty minutes, and figured that Carter had to be done by the time they got back. "Break" probably didn't run interviews that were that challenging to do well on.
When I had returned to the World Summit building, Carter was standing outside. "Come on," I urged, swinging my bag back into the direction I had came. "I'm starving."
We walked silently, and didn't say anything until after we ordered our food and sat down. "So. How'd it go?" I asked, watching my friend's face curiously.
Carter grinned. "Break, no, Kevin is freaking awesome."
I gave a smirk. "Fun fact, he's forty five."
Carter did a double take. "Shoot me. How is he forty five?!"
I shrugged. "Break doesn't age. I guess that's based off the real attribute, ha ha... so I'm assuming correctly that you got the job?"
Carter gave an excited nod.
I took this as my que and had a sudden burst of confidence that I'd come to regret. I quickly jumped up adding some flair to my movements. "VULPIX, I CHOOSE YOU!" I dramatically flung the shirt I had bought at the woman.
Carter just sighed. "Sit down, girl."
I turned and noticed the majority of the cafe staring at me. I sat down quickly, feeling my face heating up in mortification. Carter didn't even begin to notice notice. She was staring at her new shirt, and muttering a short "Fire type swag."
I pulled out my own new shirt, this one sporting an Eevee. "You're an old meme, you know that? I bet you think doge is funny."
Carter snorted. "Doge is funny."
A few seconds later, the food arrived. Carter had gotten a chicken caesar salad, and I had got a tomato mozzarella panini. We were both starving, so we scarfed them down.
After we had finished and gone outside, a glint of copper caught Carter's eye. "Penny!" she screeched, running into an alley. Nice.
"Hey, wait!" I shouted, pursuing her. "I'll give you a damn penny if you stop running! You know I can't run!"
"Exactly!" Carter shouted back. "Then... I'll have two pennies!" The woman skidded to a stop.
I slowed to a stop. However, something other than a coin caught my eye. "Um, Carter..."
The trash can tipped itself over.
