"Here you go, sir," Soriya placed the man's card on the table. "Is that going to be all?"
The elder man grinned at her before nodding.
"Yes, ma'am," He grabbed his card and stuffed it in his pocket. He pulled out a crisp $50 bill. "And this is for you, sweetheart."
"I couldn't take that from you."
"Oh, don't be that way," he sat up from his booth. "I won't tell Latricia."
Latricia Mayward was Soriya's new boss.
"Girl, you better take that damn money!" Soriya turned around to see Ms. Mayward, standing with her hand on her hip.
The man sat the money on the table before turning to leave out of the restaurant.
Once he left, Ms. Mayward sat her hand on Soriya's shoulder.
"Chile, what's the matter with you?" She scolded me. "When people give you money, you better take it."
"Yes, ma'am."
"Now hurry up and clock out so you can be home before it gets dark out." Ms. Mayward walked past by her and went into her office.
Ms. Latricia Mayward was a heavyset woman with beautiful carmel skin. Her hair was combed into delicate finger waves and was visibly soft. Everyone around town knew her as the local "candy lady." When she wasn't managing her own restaurant, she was at home selling snacks to all the kids around the community.
Her son, Kiari, was a full-time chef at Latricia's Home Kitchen. He had just got out of jail a few months ago from something related with drug trafficking. Soriya just couldn't remember what exactly.
His mom kindly offered him the position at her restaurant until he could get on his feet and he's been working there ever since.
Kinsley gave Soriya all this information before she started working there just to give her a basic idea of her work environment.
Soriya made her way into the kitchen area in the back of the restaurant. Kiari stood over the sink with his back facing her, washing the rest of the dishes from today's customers.
When he heard Soriya come in, he turned around with a grin.
