The modern city of Gusu, a part of the flourishing Planet Mo. Although not the most flourishing, it was still the best city in terms of education and inventions. The modern city of Gusu had a tall building, filled with approximately a hundred floors. This was the Cloud Recesses. The walls were blue and white, extremely blinding, however not for the citizens of the modern era. It seemed ethereal, something that couldn't be associated with the mortals that lived around it.

The Cloud Recesses was filled with people whose age could not be counted. Thousands upon thousands of millennia passed, yet they still looked as young as ever. The Cloud Recesses once rumoured to have the secret to immortality, however that rumour soon died down, as people understood that the Cloud Recesses wasn't the only one, and not all people could achieve it.

The current head, Lan Xichen, once appeared in front of the people in 2435. With a righteous voice, he told everyone what it meant to enter the Cloud Recesses inner circle and achieve immortality. One must shed one's mortality, and become a being that couldn't be said as human anymore. These people would be called cultivators.

Despite Lan Xichen's brave appearance, people were still dissatisfied. They protested, thinking that the Cloud Recesses wanted to keep the secret to immortality all to themselves. That was, until Lan Xichen came out once more, in 2871, telling everyone that the cultivators weren't just people who lived long.

He vouched for the cultivators, showing what they must leave behind if they chose to be one. Their journey would also not be good, riddled with troubles as the cultivators also had a duty.

They must leave their family behind, they must leave their loved ones behind. One could have a high affinity towards cultivation, however, one's partner might not. Although dual cultivation was a feasible option, not everyone could sync their heart, mind and soul.

In the end, people who could leave everything behind was allowed to enter the cruel path of cultivation. The past cultivation schools reappeared, the Jiang family in Yunmeng, led by their head Jiang Wanyin, the Jin family in Lanling, led by their head, Jin Rulan, and the Nie family in Qinghe, led by their head Nie Huaisang. All of them were cultivators, reluctant but rebuilt their old heritage to support their friend.

Although many people were satisfied with the current state of things, some were still ruffled. In their opinion, if one could find someone who matched with them, their soulmate, could they not cultivate as well? The four families finally found a way to be able to sense one's soulmate. A soulmate would have a soul that was fully synced with the other, thus they could slowly work the heart and mind.

Meng Yao was a thin and short boy. His mother was a deranged one, getting hooked with a rich young master only to be forgotten and wallowed in sadness. He could only live in their small flat around the outskirts of Lanling, could only watch through the Holo TV about the new batch of students accepted to Cloud Recesses through the Jin family. The place where he lived was dangerously close to the borders, to the wasteland Qingshan city. It was filled with corpses that day by day the area where he lived had to be protected by the disciples.

He had seen those students, wearing flashy clothing. Those who came from Yunmeng wore a bright purple skinsuit, ready to activate their mecha whenever they needed it. The students from Lanling wore bright golden skinsuit, around their waist were tiny pockets where they kept their weapons. The students from Qinghe had a large saber on their back, the saber was reinforced with new technologies by Cloud Recesses and forged to fit each students' style. The students from Gusu donned a white skinsuit, instead of weapons, they had a watch on their wrist, able to store their instruments to play.
