Chapter 38

Three weeks later

After all of the pre trial stuff, we finally received a court day. I was glad because that meant we were getting close to the end of going to court. Tamara had to go through a bunch of interviews with child services to see how she felt about Chris and how she felt about me. I had to see Chris on numerous occasions for documents, meetings with the judge, etc. Everything was just really stressful.

Jason, Tamara, Ethan, and I had just walked out of our front door to head to the court when tons and tons of paprazzi ran over towards us.

"Dani, how do you think the trial will go?" One reporter asked.

"Do you think Chris' fame will have any effect in the decision at trial?" Another asked.

"What will you do if you lose the trial?" The third one asked.

I answered them all with the same response:

"No comment."

It was a hassle getting out of the driveway, and it wasn't any better once we arrived at the court house. After finally getting through all of the paparazzi, we reached the court room.

"Okay, so this is how we will do this. Let's start off by hearing what each side wants. Plantiff, you may start. " The judge gestured in my direction.

I was sitting at a table with Jason by my side. I stood up nervously and cleared my throat.

"May it please the court and opposing counsel, my name is Danielle Brooks and I request that full custody of Tamara Brown remain in my possession due to the separation between the defendant and me, the criminal incident between the defendant and me, and my engagement with Jason Carter."

"Thank you counsel. Defense?" The judge gestured towards Christopher.

"Your honor, I request that full custody be removed from the plantiff and given to me because I am a fit parent and know what is best for our child, unlike the plantiff. Also, I served time for the criminal incident between the defendant and me and have been let out on parole. I've also gone to professional help services to control my temper. Because of this, I obviously have been doing better and have learned my lesson." Chris said aloud to the judge.

"Thank you counsel. Now for questions. The first one is for the defense. Why do you want full custody, instead of another alternative like shared custody?" The judge asked.

Chris stood. "Because, your honor, I feel that if there was shared custody, the plantiff still wouldn't allow me to see my daughter. Also, I do not trust the man that the plantiff is about to marry. I mean, your honor, you did background checks on the plantiff and I, but no one bothered to do a background check on her fiance. Luckily, though, I already did that." Chris paused and began to open a folder that he had on the table in front of him.

I looked over at him. Jason shifted in his seat a little.

"Your honor, I would like to submit this into evidene. It's an official background check on Jason Carter." Chris handed the document to the judge's secretary. She validated them and handed them to the judge. The judge looked them over and her eyebrow raised.

"Ms. Brooks, were you aware of any of the following charges: assault with a weapon, armed robbery, and attempted murder on March 7, 2004?" The judge asked me.

I stood up shocked. "No, I had no clue about these charges." I looked over at Jason with a confused yet angry face.

Jason stood up. "If you don't mind your honor, I would like to speak on behalf of these charges."
