Our new commander didn't have enough time to speak before the last living Thompson man spoke up, "Hey! We haven't talked about this."
"We can talk about this later," Hammond glared down at my sibling, "Right now, you do what I tell you. Garnett! You stay with the baby and Murphy until we get ba--."
"My sister is not going out there with that many Zs." Mack interjected again.
Hammond groaned, glaring at the disruptive student.
"Fine! She stays here with Garnett and Murphy."
The active soldier turned around to look at Warren, "Warren, you and I are going to see if we can start that deuce and a half. Everybody meets back here in five. Go. Go!"
"Don't move until I come back."
Mack kissed the top of my head before going out the door with the rest of the obeying followers. I walked over to Murphy, the baby, and Garnett. Charlie was watching Warren as she spoke with Hammond about their plan.
"No matter what happens, (Y/N), you stay behind me." Garnett ordered, turning his head to face me.
Then, went back to looking at Warren and Hammond, who were disappearing from sight as well.
"What's so special about Murphy?" I asked, looking over at my father-figure for the answer.
I took a step back behind him, Murphy followed my lead but added an extra two.
Garnett faced the door, but looked over his broad shoulder, "We'll talk about this later."
After about five minutes of Charlie hushing the whimpering baby, a zombie swung the front door of the high school open. Ah, shit. The undead looked around for it's meal until it found the ducks.
Garnett moved quick to set the baby down over in it's carrier they took from the vehicle and take on the Z but then another came in behind the first. Murphy moved to the corner, not bothering to take the baby with him. I took a couple steps up, seeing if I could help Charlie in any way.
The Z was blocking all attack spots.
"Uh, mister! Baby!" Murphy shouted, not moving from his corner.
"(Y/N)!" Charlie ordered quietly, becoming overwhelmed with the task at hand.
Okay, I can do this. I can do this. I ran towards the quiet baby and to the zombie that was stumbling beside it. My hand snatched the dead's already tearing shirt. It spun around and growled at me.
The guy was definitely bigger than me. I held my fist up to my chin, getting ready for a fight. With the undead. Warren showed me a couple things but other tactics have been taught by Charlie, Addy, and Mack.
As the monster came barreling at me, I kicked him straight back with my right foot. Alright, I can't just keep pushing him away until Charlie's free from his own demon. I won't be another damsel in distress at the corner of the room.
This time when it came at me, I jumped up and kicked his jaw to the left side. Warren showed me that one. As predicted, the Z stumbled to the side where his jaw was moved, but not by much. I think I just made it angrier.
It went for my shoulder, but I grabbed it's wrist just in time. The hand that wasn't holding the wrist bent at the elbow and slammed down on top of the monster's own elbow. Quickly, my left hand, that was hold it's wrist, pulled it back as my feet took a step to the side to avoid it's falling body.
The comic book creature lost balance and fell down beside my feet, like a cartoon animal falling in a trip prank.
Swiftly, I placed the bottom of my boot on it's chest. This zombie was at least six feet tall; taller than Hammond. No way I could take him on his feet.
My shaking hand grabbed the silver combat knife from my boot. The Z tried it's best to bite me while getting it's hands on my calves or on my thighs. I brought the sharp object down onto the control center; the thing that makes them, them.
No more groans or growls of death came from the dead man below me once injected with the metal. No more movement either. Just the occasional grunts from my commander.
Yet, the silence and non-moving Z just wasn't enough for my head.
I ripped the knife from it's skull, bringing it back down. I kept lifting it up and bringing it back down. Repetitively. No matter how many shouts came from Charlie, no matter how many times he tried to get me to stop, I just couldn't.
My mind and body was somewhere else. The right shoulder blade kept bringing my arm up and down so my knife would repeatedly remind me that I was the reason it was at the final stage of death.
Why does it have to be this way? I was only thirteen when this damnation happened. I didn't even have a chance at life yet; I didn't even get a fair chancd to change the world.
I had never killed a thing before this. Why do kids have to endure this when we hadn't even had the chance to fix the world?
Why does a baby have to wonder where it's mommy is? Why do I have to wonder where my mommy is at? Is she dead? Alive? In between? Right now, I should be fighting with my parents, because they wouldn't let me out of the house pass midnight.
I should be going to my brother for help and reassurance. I should be getting my first kiss right now, or even, I should be meeting my one and only. No. That's never going to happen now, because he/she is probably dead or in between.
At the moment, I'm stabbing someone's brother, someone's lover, someone's idiot of a boyfriend. I'm stabbing a father to the most handsome son or most beautiful baby girl. I'm finishing off someone who should've stayed six feet in the ground.
My body jerked at the feeling of someone touching my moving shoulder. Zombie. Still fueled by the adrenaline rush, I got up and spun around, but the person grabbed the wrist that held the knife.
"(Y/N)!"
I dropped the weapon instantly when the sight of Warren became clear as day. Oh, fuck.
"I'm.. I-I-I'm so sorry."
I felt tears welping up in my eyes. I was about to stab someone I love. I was about to kill another living person. Not saying anything to me, she just wrapped her arms around my waist and held me close to her own body.
I didn't hesitate to take the hug. A hug from someone like Lieutenant Roberta Warren is a rare thing to receive.
"It's not your fault. You're okay, alright? You didn't do anything wrong."
I nodded my head, still not releasing the comforter.
