I grabbed the side of 10K's shirt, growing nervous as the human-zombie female began to hunker down and sniff the air. What is she planning?
"She wouldn't hurt us, would she?"
She remember my name only a day ago. That's progress, right?
10K kept silent for a single moment before answering my question, "Our Cassandra would've never shoved you against a table."
He's got a point. She cared about every single one of us, but never batted an eye towards Murphy. She only believed in him, because of the antibodies coursing through his veins. The new Cassandra has ghost eyes and a hollow heart towards everyone but Murphy.
Changing her in a way that only Murphy can do to a single person. With a bite mark, apparently. When we got to the front entrance, the people were about to let us in when we all heard the common snarl on our right.
While 10K swerved around to face the problem, throwing his rifle over his shoulders and to the front of his body, I was turning to the left with my new weapon in hand. I felt the back of my heel touch his, letting him know I had his back.
I placed a knife in between my thumb and pointer finger, leveling the light weight beside my head. Cassandra growled before getting in front of our bodies, squatted down. It seemed like her hair was wilder and her eyes spoke zombie.
She hissed into the now silent air, showing us she didn't like the situation any more than we did.
"It's clear." 10K mumbled to us when he saw nothing through his scope.
"I heard it, though." I refused to believe that my ears were playing tricks on me.
The people behind the metal shields heard it as well, so why isn't anything attacking us?
"I did too." He agreed with me, "We're going inside, now."
Agreeing that it was time to leave the outside world for a couple minutes, we lowered our weapons and holstered them. Surprisingly, Cassandra ran off into the distance, not saying where she was headed.
10K and I looked at each other before shrugging it off has primal instinct to run off, crazy. We turned to the human shield's, who graciously opened up for us, and quickly made our way inside, safely.
I adjusted my knives against my thigh while 10K's adjusted his strap on his shoulder.
"Come on, let's go over there."
I grabbed the front of his vest, tugging him over to the group that Sam had formed with all of our people, minus Cassandra. Sam led the group into a discussion, standing in front of us with authority and pride present.
Warren and Sam were directly in front of each other, but the attention seemed to be directed towards him. Murphy and Doc were on Warren's left, standing side-by-side. Murphy had an unamused look plastered on his non-human colored skin.
Doc seemed cheerful and ready to take on the world, even though we all knew he was exhausted. Vasquez took the place on Warren's right, then 10K and I made our way to his right. Warren is a grown ass woman, but Vasquez always seems to follow her around.
As if she's the one needing protection. I kept a grip on 10K's vest in case he tried to move away from me and go somewhere else. We're in this group discussion together.
Once we got settled into their little form, Sam nodded his heads towards us, showing he acknowledged our presence.
I looked around, still not seeing Cassandra anywhere near us. Weird. I'm surprise Murphy isn't calling her with his mind, or ordering her to rub his shoulders.
"Three days ago, we tangled with some bounty hunters."
"Bounty hunters, huh?" Murphy interrupted Sam, probably trying to call Vasquez out with the venomous tone he used.
"'We don't want to kill you,' they said. 'We're just thirsty,' they said. But I think they were out of their minds."
Sam chuckled at the distant memory as if he was telling the tale of how Wrecking Ball took his first steps. As he looked over at us, I could tell that he was trying his best to remember the faces of the men who stepped into his life.
"They kept rambling on about some half-zombie, half-man with telekinetic powers."
That's not very good; Sam must not believe in a vaccine, or how the original vaccine could change a human. I looked to my left, watching as Warren was staring down at her dusty boots and scratching the crease of her nose.
She's nervous and probably doesn't know how to tell him that the 'half-zombie, half-man with telekinetic powers' was literally standing in front of him. Sam didn't seem too open-minded about the rumor, though.
"Like a world overrun with zombies isn't strange enough."
Little do you know, my man.
"Those are just some crazy rumors we've heard, too." I agreed, nodding my head when I saw no one from my group was going to agree with Sam on it being 'crazy' or try to change the mind of an old man.
It's better to agree with this alpha than try to prove his mind wrong. The less people that knows about Murphy, the better.
"It's good to have people who think like you." Sam tipped his head towards me before clapping his hands together, "Let's get the show on the road."
Sam turned around on his heels, putting his back to us--which seemed to be a relief to Warren, "Saddle up! Edmonton awaits!"
Before we split up into different parts of the rig, I tugged on 10K's vest slits, "Where are you going to be?"
"Nest." He pointed behind us, towards the front of the semi.
He may not have known it was her spot, but a female stood at the very top of the eagle point, just staring off into the distance. She didn't even seem to be watching out for the undead. Not very observant, but very pretty.
"I'm going to be in the back with Addy, making sure she has the help she may need with the patients."
I let go of the zig-zag fabric, turning around to walk away from him when I felt a slight tug from my hand.
"Stay with me."
I felt my heart skip a beat at the three, simple words he spoke towards me. The look in his light blue eyes told me that he was actually serious, and not playing a joke like I was assuming that was happening.
"Are you sure?"
Does he really mean it, or is this a choice I can make all on my own?
He nodded his head, confirming that he wanted me to go with him, "Vasquez is going to need help watching the right side."
I knew those eagle eyes of his could watch both sides of the semi while staying in the middle, but it felt nice to be wanted. Especially near him.
"You had me at 'stay'." I grinned from ear-to-ear, changing my direction in a matter of seconds.
He released my hand from his grasp, and I felt myself wanting him to come back. It felt nice to have his hand wrapped around mine. I shook it off, though, as me wanting more hugs from people.
Human affection is still a must for people like me.
