''Gather around! Bring it in, c'mon!'' Coach's Finstock's voice echoes of a sudden throughout the entirety of the locker room, ceasing the stick's fight between Gabe and I and all the nervous chatting happening all around the room. The teams is quick to make half a moon around the middle aged man but not as quick as he'd like. ''Quicker! John why are you shirtless? Where's Kavinsky?''
''I'm here!'' Peter says on cue. He's breathless as he stumbles inside the locker room, his white and blue equipment already on but poorly arranged. ''Sorry I'm late.'' Gabe pats his friend's shoulder as he joins the meeting. ''Go on Coach.'' Finstock eyes him up and down with his classic wit before his voice shouts again, louder than the thunder storm that installed itself today and matched the aura of the game.
''Today's game is easily, easily, the most important one of the entire season. It's also the most difficult-'' I lean back against the lockers beside me as I listen attentively. ''And as you may know we have a crucial part of our team missing, your captain is doing god knows what in England.''
''He's at a weeding sir.'' Peter informs tightening the strings of his stick, before I can beat him to say the same.
''Well, I hope it's him who's getting married because otherwise there's no reason.'' Coach says, provoking the eruption of everyone's laughter. ''Anyway, Thompson you're the captain today.'' Peter's neck cracks as he quickly turns to face me. I bewilderingly jump at unexpected the sound of my name.
''What?'' My mouth is open to my chest. My voice has an echo behind it as Peter asks the same at the same time. Bewilderment is the expression in both of our faces.
'''Am I speaking Chinese? Alec is the captain!'' Coach grins and then as he points his slant board at me his expression drops and his tone changes to warning. ''Don't disappoint me.'' I shake my head, radiant with the news.
''Coach?'' Peter chuckles bitterly over the team who's happily congratulating me. ''I've always been the captain when Isaac's gone.'' My smile immediately fades, I can't believe the words coming out of Peter's mouth, although we aren't the best friends of they don't sting any less.
We're team mates and I know I wouldn't argue back if it was the other way around.
''You were, yes, before you started slacking off.'' The man says, un-bothered by the teens burst. ''You're not playing Kavinsky.''
''WHAT?'' The brunet shouts completely distressed, the stick previously in his hands falls to the floor and Gabe is quick to pick it back up and hand it to the boy but he doesn't care for it no more. ''You can't bench me! Not to me and not today! I score the most out of all of us-''
''I can and I am!'' Coach Finstock says defiantly and then turns to the rest of the team that's has fallen into an awkward silence. ''Let this serve as an example for you all. No missing practices goes to the championships.'' I try to get a grip of Peter to try to calm him down but he pushes me away, my back hits the lockers and I know I should stay quiet.
''Coach I've been waiting for this game all season!'' Peter says with faux calm, trying desperately to reason with the man that's already turning to leave towards his office. ''Please-'' Coach turns back around visibly annoyed with Peter's stubbornness.
''I don't care Kavinsky, you should have thought about that before, and don't pout like a toddler for god's sake. You'll be competing at college level soon and I'll not be having my name shamed around when you keep acting this recklessly at UCLA.'' He eyes the rest of us with a warning expression. ''Game starts in ten, I want you all outside a minute ago!
