"Ned, I have to go," Peter rolled his eyes into the phone even though Ned couldn't see it. Ned kept rambling for a few seconds about the mistakes in the new Star Wars movie before he finally said goodbye, letting Peter get to his internship with Tony Stark.Peter walked in and gave a friendly wave to the receptionist when there was a slight pain in his ribs. His eyebrows furrowed but he continued to wave and say hi to all the people he passed. Most of them responded in their usual friendly tone. A few did glare at them but he ignored those few and got into the private elevator.
"Hey FRI," He grinned facing forward. He heard the AI begin to respond but stopped when another guy stepped into the elevator. Peter knew he's seen him around but couldn't place a name.
"Peter, Mr. Maddle, going up or down?"
"Down," They responded at the same time and looked at each other. Peter sensed the tense air and gave an uncomfortable smile.
"So, Lilly," Maddle began and Peter looked up in shock and anger. Peter changed his name long ago and wasn't even sure how this guy knew what his old name was before he switched genders.
"I, uh, go by Peter now, thanks," Peter controlled his anger and gave another more empty smile to the stranger.
"Sorry, Lilly, but I'll stick with your original name," Maddle passed an awful grin to Peter. FRI recorded the whole encounter and immediately notified Tony about what was happening.
"What's this?" Tony watched and listened for a moment, deep creases forming in his forehead from confusion. "Why is he calling Pete 'Lilly'?" Tony didn't get a response from his AI and requested where they were stopping before storming off using another private elevator to get there.
"Lilly, you should accept who you are," Maddle glowered at Pete who refused to make eye contact. "Wear a dress, Lilly, you are a girl." The doors opened a few seconds after the last comment and Peter walked out first, only to stop when he saw Tony standing angrily across from them. Maddle made no more comments but just walked on past them but when he passes Stark he almost dropped dead.
"You're fired, I want you gone in under an hour," Tony pointed at Maddle who stared flustered.
"O-okay," Maddle then rushed off to gather his things in embarrassment but no ounce of shame for his actions. Peter gave Tony a rushed smile and then ducked his head, trying to avoid him. Tony rolled his eyes and put a hand on the kid's shoulder.
"What was that all about?"
"Nothing, Mr. Stark," Peter lied easily and Tony caught on when his eyes flickered downwards. Peter rubbed his ribs and tried to shrug out of Tony's hold.
"That was not 'nothing'," Tony's eyebrows furrowed. "Why was he calling you 'Lilly'?" Peter looked down with discomfort at the question. Peter wasn't uncomfortable with who he was now, but he used to be Lilly. He was no longer a girl. And he didn't want his mentor to know about that especially when he did get harassed because of it.
"Cause that's who I was."
"What does that mean?" Tony urged the kid to continue.
"I'm trans, Mr. Stark," Peter shuffled his feet, waiting for his mentor's reaction. Peter knew it wasn't going to be bad, he was always scared to tell anybody.
"Oh," Tony looked over the kid finding no ounce of feminity in him. "Okay." Another sharp pain shot through Peter's ribs and he winced
"And, yeah," Peter rolled his eyes slightly. "I have to wear a binder but it's too small now. It works fine, I just can't wear it for too long." Tony's eyes widened slightly.
"It's hurting you, isn't it?" Stark asks after a moment and Peter's eyes snapped up with slight guilt. Tony wasn't sure why he was feeling guilty for being in pain, but that's just kind of how the kid works.
"It's fine-"
"No, it's not," Tony sighed. "I'm ordering you a new one- don't give me that look- and you are going to get rid of this small one because I don't want you hurt. And I bet your Aunt doesn't know it's too small, either." Peter's silence confirmed Tony's thoughts. "Great, wonderful. I'll have Pepper help order me one, you go do- stuff." Tony nodded to himself.
"Mr. Stark, I can get a new one myself."
"If you could've, you would've," Tony's eyes didn't hold any pity, just their usual playful stern glint. "Don't you have interning to do?"
"Oh right!" Peter took a few steps before turning to grin at Tony. "Thanks, Mr. Stark." His eyes held genuine thanks and Tony have a half smile.
"No problem, kid."
