Chapter Six: Not Even Friends
________________

||Third Person||

Both of their palms were sweating. Lily's was sweating merely because she was scared for her son, and Snape was sweating because of Lily and her presence. Not in the bad way though, Lily had always made him feel nervous because what if he messed up or embarrassed himself in front of her? But of course, that had all been done before. When he had called her a mudblood, when he had harnessed harsh words toward her, when he had been embarrassed beyond compare when his frail underwear was revealed to many many students.....

Maybe he should ask how she's doing, or how her son is, or maybe why she's in St Mungo's. Oh merlin, why was she here?

"What are you doing here?" Severus asked, coming across much more harsher than he meant to be. Every time he talked to her, he wanted to say how much he does care and how much he really wants to be friends again, but instead he tended to say things quite meanly. And then Lily would take offence to it...oh when will he stop messing up?

"Harry had gotten worse." she gulped, glancing worriedly to the door where her son was hidden and unconscious behind.

When Severus didn't answer, she went on.

"I thought that after I gave him the Pepperup Potion, he was better. But earlier he was vomiting so much blood..."

Lily trailed off with a clouded expression. Her bright green eyes seemed so lifeless. Snape clutched the files closer to his chest and averted his gaze to the ground, unsure of what to say.

"Maybe you should've let me make the potion...perhaps it wouldn't have poisoned him." He muttered under his breath. She shot him a disapproving and disappointed look.

"I'm sure the potion was fine." Lily rolled her eyes and crossed her arms defensively. "Your mean comments aren't needed right now."

His eyes widened at her in surprise, but he quickly stopped and pretended to flip through the files. One thing he had always cherished about her was her stubbornness and how she stands up for herself. Never had he thought she'd need to stand up against him. It must be the bitterness again.

"So why are you here?" Lily sighed.

"Running an errand for Dumbledore." Severus explained flatly. "Apparently all the other Professors are busy-"

"Dumbledore?!" Lily exclaimed, finally sounding like she had awoken from the dead. He smirked as she perked up.

"Yes."

"You're...you're a Professor at Hogwarts?"

"I teach Potions." Severus then arched an eyebrow at her. "Why?"

She flushed and shrugged, turning to look at the door once more. "I'm looking for a job. Being a Professor was the only thing that appealed to me, but of course it's already November."

Severus thought about Lily working at Hogwarts. If she worked there, surely she'd keep quarters there. Then they'd be living under the same roof. He'd be able to gain her trust once more, maybe gain something a little extra...

"I am sure Dumbledore will give you something." He replied quite brightly, making Lily shift awkwardly. Man, every encounter they had was awkward.

Severus was about to ask about visiting so they can have that 'talk' about their lives, and maybe he can confess something that had been torturing him for the past few years; but a young male Healer left the room Harry was in and approached Lily.

"Mrs Potter?"

"Yes that's me." She straightened up boldly.

"You may take your son home, but come back tomorrow afternoon for another blood sample. Plenty of rest and plenty of water for him, no food for the next ten hours." The Healer said. Lily nodded and looked at Snape with that farewell look. He hated that look from her, because often he becomes so attached that he never wants to leave her.

"I'll see you Severus." She said and without waiting for a goodbye, she turned on her heel and disappeared to get her baby with the Healer closely behind.

For several minutes Snape stood there, staring at the spot she had just been. How was it possible, to love someone this much? He was willing to give her his heart even if it was to be ripped. The worst part was that she didn't think of him that way. She didn't even think of him as a friend anymore.

Trying to blink foolish tears away, he began to walk back to Hogwarts.
