"I suppose the two of you are wondering why I've decided to call both of you here today."
"Well, yes."
Haruki and Shisui stood before the Hokage's desk one morning; they had just dropped off their kids to daycare and gone their separate ways, but upon arriving to their respective workplaces, each had been informed that their presence had been requested by the village leader.
"I need the two of you to be escorts," sighed Minato. Haruki choked on her saliva at his request, raising a hand in protest.
"Hokage-sama-"
"I know what you're going to say," cut in Minato, shaking his head. "And don't worry, it doesn't involve you leaving the village. Actually, it requires the two of you to be tour guides, in a sense."
"What?"
"In three weeks time, we will be hosting a group of around thirty Academy-aged students from Sunagakure in a homestay programme and engaging them in lessons similar to what we offer our own students," explained the Hokage, grabbing a piece of paper from the top of one of his towering stacks and reading out its content. "They will be with us for two weeks, and for the two weeks they'll be here, I want the two of you to be in charge of them."
"As in...?"
"The thirty Suna students will have a programme of their own to follow when they attend the Academy," elaborated Minato, shuffling through more papers to find what we was looking for. "And I want you two to be the coordinators."
"Got it. What's the programme?"
"About that... there kind of is no programme."
"Huh?"
Minato beamed and threw a bunch of papers in the air, looking like he absolutely didn't have any more cares in the world.
"That's up to you!" he cheered, tilting his head at the couple. "I'm giving you two free rein on what you want to do with these kids- whatever you want to do, let us know, and we'll give you the money! Take them out on trips, do something fun, whatever!"
"Hokage-sama, is that really wise? Why don't you give us a budget first, and we can-"
"I don't care! Just do fun things and get the Suna kids excited about being here!" groaned Minato, slamming his face on his desk in anguish. "I'm so stupid! I should've planned this months ago, but I forgot it was even happening! We can't let these kids down! The Kazekage is probably expecting so much from this trip!"
Minato let out a small sob as he banged his fists on the table, prompting Haruki and Shisui to exchange looks of pity.
"Hokage-sama, leave it all up to us," said Haruki reassuringly, feeling sorry for the Hokage as he wallowed in the depths of his own forgetfulness. "But first, could you give us more details? Such as the children's profiles, where they'll be staying, and who they'll be accompanied by?"
"Yes, yes, I'll give you their profiles," pouted Minato, turning his head and staring at the wall. "They'll be split up throughout the village with other shinobi families, but some of them won't have any host siblings of Academy age. Also, by the way, they'll be accompanied by the Kazekage's children and one jōnin. So, please, be extra nice to them."
"Since when did we do homestay programmes?" joked Shisui, finding it amusing how relationships between the hidden villages has eased up in the past few years.
"Since we wanted to show goodwill and strengthen our bonds with our neighbours," sighed Minato, closing his eyes. "Anyway, Suna are sending their kids first, and we'll respond by sending a bunch of our kids there later on. Damn it! That's what else I needed to organise!"
"Hokage-sama, how many of these homestay programmes do you have planned?"
"None! Because I'm horrible at remembering what needs to be done!"
"If you need more help, just ask Shisui," shrugged Haruki, patting her husband on the back. "There's nothing he loves more than liaising and paperwork."
"Haru-chan."
"Not a bad idea! Shisui, what exactly are you doing now? Except for the odd mission I give you every now and then?"
"Well... when I'm not writing up reports on those missions, I'm just... doing ordinary village shinobi stuff. Wall guard, patrolling the village, that kind of stuff."
"Well, what if, I stopped sending you on missions altogether?" asked Minato hopefully, sitting up in his seat. "How would you like to work here, with me?!"
Shisui sweatdropped as he eyed out the mountain of paperwork surrounding the Hokage's desk, paling as he envisioned himself stuck behind it every single day.
"Just temporarily, of course!" added Minato hastily, seeing the look of hesitation on Shisui's face. "Come on, Shisui, please? Could you do me this favour in return for me not dispatching you on high risk Anbu missions anymore?"
"Come on, Shisui, look at him," sighed Haruki pitifully, shaking her head. Minato gasped and covered his mouth, now fully aware of what he'd just said.
"I didn't... uhh, Anbu... uhh..."
"It's okay. I know," said Haruki. "I've seen Shisui naked, Hokage-sama. That Anbu tattoo is pretty hard to hide."
"Look, if you want to know why we wanted Shisui as a member and not you, it's not because we think you're less of a shinobi, it's-"
"Honestly, Hokage-sama, it's not a big deal. And also, I think you need a break. It's too early in the day for you to be losing the plot like this."
"I can't help it," mourned Minato, slamming his face back onto his desk. Shisui sighed, and stepped forward.
"Yes, I can come and help you. Do you want me to organise these goodwill homestay trips you have planned?"
"Oh, yes! Please do! I'll get you your own desk and everything! What do you say?"
"Well, I've got one last report I need to finish up, and I have wall guard duty today. I can start tomorrow?"
"Perfect! I'm handing over all correspondence about these trips to you, Shisui!"
"So... am I still needed?" asked Haruki skeptically, raising an eyebrow at the Hokage.
"Yes, of course! If the Suna homestay goes well, and we successfully send a bunch of our kids over there, we'll probably make it something regular and introduce similar programmes with other Hidden Villages! You and Shisui are a team!"
Minato straightened back up, slamming his palms down flat on the tabletop.
"From today onwards, the two of you are Team Shiruki!" he exclaimed. "I'm counting on you, Shiruki!"
Haruki and Shisui deflated at hearing their team name.
Not "Team Shisui." Not "Team Haruki."
"Team Shiruki," laughed Shisui, covering his mouth with one hand. "Not bad."
"Onwards, Team Shiruki! Foster good relationships with our neighbours!"
"... yes, Hokage-sama."
