the next month passed quickly. too quickly.

i spent most of my time with ali, max, and lily. ali and i patched things up and became even stronger by the mishap.

harvey got suspended from school for two weeks, but  given all the time in the world, we didn't talk unless it was necessary or very short (like at dinner or if he made a joke and i happened to laugh and comment on it.)

ali and i had two weeks left with max and harvey, which overall put me in an upset mood all of the time. my mind kept flashing back to the good parts of our visit. like at the mall the day we got our party outfits or when i first met them in the airport.

ali cried a few times when we'd start talking about it. i'd hug her and tears would well up in my eyes.

i didn't hold anything against ali because i knew it was harvey's fault. even though she lied, i knew she didn't mean to hurt me. she said was sorry and i knew she meant it.

honestly i didn't know how sorry harvey actually was. the whole thing with harvey and jess was still happening, throwing our friendship out of balance, leaving me to think that we wouldn't have the necessary amount of time to make things work.

"kathryn! it's saturday why are we still here?" ali said, coming through our room door.

i shrugged as i continued to text lily about plans for tomorrow. "i just didn't have anything planned for today since i planned something with lily for tomorrow." i replied, looking at all.

"let's go bowling. i've been talking to max about it downstairs and he said there's a really nice bowling alley in town we should go to," ali said with a smile.

yes, ali and max also decided to put their relationship and the drama that had taken place behind them. they wanted to be friends.

i looked at her for a second and contemplated what to do. did i want to sit in my room and do nothing or go bowling with max and ali?

"okay let me put my shoes on and we should be good to go," i said while getting off the bed and opening the closet to grab my vans.

"yayyy i'll tell max!" ali said happily as she walked back downstairs.

i sighed and wondered where harvey was. last night he went to a friends' place, saying he'd be back in the morning. it was 4 pm and he was still gone. maybe he was with jess. maybe he was with another girl. once a cheater always a cheater as i said before.

"welcome to our town's favorite bowling alley!" max said as we walked through the doors.

"woah. you didn't mention it was a glow in the dark one! that's so cool!" ali exclaimed.

max and i laughed as ali ran to the front desk to book our game. "so i guess we're all friends again." i said with a small smile. "yeah. i feel like it's better like this. relationships make things messy." he replied.

"what's up with harvey?" i asked, suddenly stopping and looking to him for an answer. if anyone knows harvey well enough, it should be his twin.

max sighed. "classic post-breakup harvey is what's happening. pushing people further and further away, getting someone new in less than a day after things end, acting like he doesn't care about anything. he's been doing it for longer than usually though, which is strange. but i think he's holding it out because he really liked you and he pushed you away." max said, looking at me.

max searched my face, looked over every single detail of it for a few seconds. i cant say i didn't want to kiss him in that moment because i did want to.

i looked away first, causing him to do the same. his hand rose and touched the back of his neck as he looked down.

"i'm sorry i didn't mean to make it weird. i just forgot all the drama for a second. i didn't mean to make you uncomfortable." he explained, not meeting my eyes.

i looked over at ali, who was now at the concessions pointing at the menu. i laughed a little before looking back to max.

he looked up at me, most likely expecting me to tell him that i'm not interested.

i looked over his face for a second then into his deep eyes. he had beautiful eyes. so did harvey. but the difference was that max's were full of emotion all the time. harvey had walls built up at all times, unless he chose for it to be otherwise for a split second.

in that moment, when no one was paying attention to two souls with drama surrounding them, i felt my heart flutter. my eyes flicked down to his lips then back to his eyes.

i leaned in and felt small sparks. for the few seconds that the kiss lasted, i felt the affection that harvey's kisses had lacked. it was the affection i had craved.
