Nightmare was still on the ground, but he had changed to sit against a tree next to the human. his book close to his chest as he stared at the ground. The human was toying with the sleeve of her sweater, looking just as uncomfortable as himself. Not having good social skills and the only other person he ever had a conversation with was his brother. trying his best to break the silent made the gears turn in his head on what he could say. thankfully were you the first one to speak by softly asking for his name. he dryly answer before asking the same for her. they answered and Nightmare found it actually quite fitting for them.
"So you're one of the guardians?" another question came from her. Nightmare knew this was coming, but he couldn't help to sound bitter while answering her. "Yes. You didn't know? none of the other humans speaking of me." he would be surprised if they didn't talk negative about him when he's back was turned. They had quite well said what they felt about him straight to his face. A feeling began to built inside him. not quite knowing what it was, but he knew he had felt it before. he wanted them to suffer.
"Of course I knew. I just wanted to-to make sure of it." the answer to his question made him break back to reality. It was hard to mistake him or his brother for anyone else. Not many skeleton were walking around. "I have heard...heard more people talk of you brother than you." Nightmare couldn't help but chuckle at her words. "Of course they speak more of him than me", his words came out as mumble. "Why, Is there something more special about him?" Nightmare picked up that she didn't stutter this time, but he felt the annoyance from earlier came back.
He chuckled dryly before he spoke. "Because everyone loves that goody two shoe. Someone that are always spreading happiness and god feeling, someone that will brighten up their days, someone guarding the pretty shiny golden apples instead of the dark ugly one. Instead of someone that ruins everything." The last sentence cameo out nearly above a whisper. "What's wrong with the dark side of the tree?" she tilted her head while making eye contact with Nightmare. "It has darkness in them... no one like negative emotions" he could hear the bitterness in his own voice. Here eyes changed into something that Nightmare quiet couldn't place.
"Sorry for asking" she hugged her legs closer as she kept looking down at the earth she was sitting on. "why are you out here?" trying her best to keep a conversation I see. "Why are YOU out here" he simply asked back. Not in the mood to tel a complete stranger, that was a human, why he went into the forest. "Bully's" Nightmare shot his head toward her, not expecting an answer. "Same" he said, feeling the need to answer the question. When quiet broke out again Nightmare decided to be the one to break the silence with a question this time. "Um... so, er.... Do you like books?"
It seemed to have been the right question to ask, because the two talked about it for hours. What genre books they like to read, Favorite books, favorite author, worst book they had read and many more. The topics changed a little with some non books related question, but they were quick on track again. It seemed for both of them were opening a tiny bit more up with each question. In the start only answering
The sun were beginning to set. It would probably gone forever if it wasn't for- "NIGHTMARE!" Dreams yell broke through the forest. "Seems like your brother is looking for you", her eyes shimmered with the last sunshine of the day. "I should probably head back before my parents begins to look for me too" she got up and offered Nightmare a hand and a smile. A what tingly feeling filled Nightmare and he took her hand so she could help him up. "Meet you hear tomorrow?" Nightmare saw hope in her eyes and smiled back. "Meet you her tomorrow"
Nightmare didn't know why he feels so warm and giggly as he walked to find his brother. He had never had a friendly conversation other than with his brother, and some animals ... he really need friends instead of going on angry rants to the owl that showed up every night. At least they were a good listener.
Dream looked quite pale when Nightmare finally found him and were quick to pull his older brother into a hug and tell him how worry he was. Nightmare usually told him when he would go into the woods to find a quiet place to read and how long he would be gone, so Dream had all rights to worry. Nightmare felt a tiny bit of guilt when he saw how worry he was. "why were you gone so long?" Dream curiously asked as they walked back through the forest. "I just got caught up in the book" He didn't know why he was lying to his brother, but a part of him wanted you to stay a secret. his brother would probably marvel you like he did everyone else and you would stop talking to him.
Dream didn't calm down until they were back at the three. The sun had finally set and the first stars was visible on the sky. They made their way over to the tree where Dream quickly fell asleep, leaning up against nightmare. Even if he wanted to, Nightmare just couldn't sleep. The human, y/n he believed her name was. Was on his mind. He was used to having human harass him, but she was different. Kindness was shown in everything she did. No screaming or running away when she found out who he was. Not even an insult. She could be faking it Maybe, just maybe he could actually make a friend...
