I looked out over the horizon from my outpost, my legs dangling over the side. Why I had offered to take Snotlout's Night patrol, I had no idea. I did however feel completely uncomfortable after asking Storm who the woman that had been flying with Snotlout the other day had been. Honestly, I had no idea how Queen Mala had fallen in love with Snotlout. It brought disorder to the universe! Snotlout was the flirt of the team, everyone knew this, but for someone to actually like him back was just... I shivered at the thought. It wasn't natural. Either way, she had become our ally and even though I didn't understand the queen's logic when it came to Snotlout, I did agree with her acceptance of dragons. I focused back on the ocean ahead of me, the water's surface reflecting the stars that flowed like a swarm of Flightmares. I felt something shift beside me and turned to see Lilac moving to sit next to me.
"May I ask why you offered to take Snotlout's night patrol? You rarely do something like this for him."
"I didn't do it for him. I just... wanted to come out here. It's so peaceful during the night." Lilac sighed and curled herself around me, resting her head in my lap.
"Feels almost like home when it's like this. Just the ocean breeze and the sounds of other dragons around you." Lilac commented, her tail hanging lazily over the edge of the platform.
"Yeah. That's why I like it. When it's like this, it's just you and the peaceful night sky. No worries weighing you down. Just how it was back on our island." Lilac lifts her head off my lap and looks at me.
"Melia? Is something wrong?" Lilac asked. I sighed, leaning back onto Lilac's scaly body with my arms crossed over my chest.
"I'm sure you figured out by now that I'm not really spying on the hunters, huh." I stated.
"Melia, I've known you for fourteen years. It's become quite obvious to me when you lie."
"It's not really lying! It's just... not sharing the truth because I'm afraid the guys won't be happy with me."
"Well... you can tell me the truth." Lilac said, nuzzling my cheek.
"I don't know. You might not like it."
"You've been like a little sister to me for years. I won't judge you if you just tell me." I sat silently for a moment, staring out at the ocean once more.
"I think... I think I've fallen in love, Lilac."
"In love? Well, that's wonderful! I don't see why you'd want to hide that."
"I'm hiding it because I've fallen in love with the leader of the dragon hunters." I muttered. Lilac's warm smile fell.
"Oh... That is quite the predicament."
"That's all you're going to say?!" Lilac stared at me confused.
"What would you like me to say?"
"I... I don't know. Tell me I'm crazy for falling for the enemy of dragons! Tell me I'm insane! Tell me to stop!" I exclaimed, lifting my knees up to hide my face. I felt Lilac sit up and wrap her tail around me.
"I can't tell you to stop love, Melia. That's not how life works." Lilac cooed.
"But this isn't right! Him and his people have hunted thousands of dragons! I'm falling in love with a murderer, Lilac!"
"Melia. I want you to think for a moment. What made you fall in love with this man?" I looked up, staring out at the horizon as I thought.
"He's smart and kind..."
"What else?"
"He... He sees that dragons are intelligent creatures. Even though he hunts them, he knows that they have feelings like us." I looked up at Lilac to see her smiling softly at me.
"And that is why you fell in love with him. Deep down in your heart you know he's more than just a killer. He's a caring man." I sighed, leaning into her scales.
"I guess you're right." I remarked, my eyelids fluttering closed. "Thank you, Lilac. Goodnight."
"Sweet dreams, Melia."
