Storm and I stood off to the side, watching Queen Mala talk to Hiccup about something. Well... Storm was. I was watching Throk as he led Viggo away to his holding cell. My fingers subconsciously brushed against my satchel, feeling the object that sat inside it.
"Melia, Storm!" Hiccup called to us, causing me to snap my attention away from Viggo. Storm and I followed Hiccup as Mala led him to a stream of lava where the Eruptodon stood watching...
"Oh my Thor..." I muttered under my breath, smiling at the sight before me.
"Oh! It hatched? It hatched!" Fishlegs exclaimed pushing his way past us to get a better look at the baby Eruptodon. The young hatchling looked up at us from its molten snack, tilting its head curiously at the new faces.
"A few weeks past. He must be protected and must keep his hunger satiated."
"I'd bet." I remarked, letting out an airy laugh at the last part. The hatchling looked up at me, his body shaking in excitement as I knelt down, the hatchling practically leaping at me in excitement. "Well, I guess he recognized my voice!" I exclaimed, scratching the little dragon on the head. He purred, bumping his head against my palm for more scratches.
"He's too young and frail to survive anything other than what's necessary." Mala explained, smiling at me. Just as she finished her sentence, blasts hit the hills far behind her, startling all of us. The Eruptodon hatchling pressed his snout into my stomach, whimpering from the sudden loud noise.
"Oh, you mean something like that?"
"Shut up, Snotlout!" Storm yelled at him, running for Starfire. I stood cradling the hatchling close to me, Fishlegs running up beside me.
"We need to get the Eruptodon out of here."
"Yes, please."
"Fishlegs, go. Take Melia with you." I turned on Hiccup, looking surprised.
"Hiccup, I can help."
"Not without your own dragon. You'd be in too much danger. Go with Fishlegs and keep the baby safe." I growled in frustration, but agreed, sliding my satchel off my shoulders before handing the hatchling to Fishlegs so I could take off my cloak. I then mounted Meatlug and took the hatchling back wrapping him in my cloak as a sort of blanket protector.
"We'll protect him as if he were one of our own, we promise." Fishlegs called up to the Eruptodon mother before Meatlug flew us further inland. I cradled the hatchling close, hissing in pain as his tail hit my bruised skin. "Are you okay?" Fishlegs asked as Meatlug landed, looking at me as he dismounted.
"Fine. Just a bit bruised up is all. Who wouldn't be bruised after an unhappy Ryker tried to kill you?"
"So Ryker actually attacked you? How'd he know you were a spy? Not even Viggo figured it out." Fishlegs asked, digging through his bag, producing healing ointment. I set the hatchling down on Meatlug's back, taking the ointment bottle with a thankful smile.
"I have a feeling Ryker believed I was up to something the entire time. He never did like me." I explained, lifting my tunic a little to see the bruise I was going to rub the ointment on. I winced at its size, knowing I for sure had a couple of bruised ribs if my skin was that badly damaged. The hatchling sniffed at it as I rubbed the ointment on, even daring to lick some of the ointment, seeming to think that since it smelled good, it would taste good. He learned his mistake quick. I handed the ointment back to Fishlegs and stared at the hatchling, petting his head. "We should call you something, huh. How about...?" I trailed off thinking, "Volcan." Volcan purred at his new name, bumping his head against my hand for pets. I laughed, obliging.
"Guess he likes it." Fishlegs remarked, petting him as well. I nodded before turning my head, listening.
"The assault on the island has ceased. We should head back and meet the others." Fishlegs turned to where we had come from, taking the spyglass out of his satchel to look. I moved to do the same, frowning when instead of slipping my hand into my satchel, my hand brushed my tunic. I turned my head, thinking I had simply missed it. I was wrong. "Fishlegs, where's my satchel?" I asked, turning my head every which way, trying to find it.
"Umm... Didn't you pick it back up?"
"I thought I did!" I exclaimed, my search becoming more frantic, "We need to get back now!"
"Melia, are you okay?" Fishlegs asked, seeming worried.
"I will be once I get my satchel back. C'mon." I lifted Volcan onto my lap, urging Fishlegs to hurry as he mounted Meatlug and flew us back to where we had come from. As we landed, I could see the guys arguing with Mala and Throk about something.
"He escaped?" I heard Astrid say as we landed, only just noticing the grate that had been placed over Viggo's cell propped open.
"What's going on? Where's Viggo?"
"He's gone." Storm growled, hugging her arms tight around herself as she glared at the empty pit.
"The explosions allowed him to slip away. I... I have failed you." Throk explained.
"You sure did, Throkman. I would be looking for a new gig if I were you. Or a new head!" Snotlout remarked, earning a punch in the gut from Storm, causing him to double over in pain before she bonked him in the back of the head, sending him face first into the ground before she placed her foot on his back, holding him down. I hopped quickly off of Meatlug, leaving Volcan in Fishlegs' care as I searched for my satchel, only half listening to the rest of the conversation. I searched and searched, almost giving up when I finally caught sight of it pinned to a tree, the strap caught on a dagger that was lodged into the bark. I bolted for it, ripping my satchel down and frantically opening it, searching, but to no avail.
"Melia! We gotta get back to the Edge!" Storm called, making me turn as I clutched my satchel angrily.
"What's wrong?" Hiccup asked, noticing my distraught look.
"It's gone. He took it."
"Took what? Who?"
"The Dragon Eye. Viggo took the Dragon Eye, Hiccup."
