When I first came to Seoul, it smelled funny. It wasn't dirty but the city lacked the freshness home had. Home, back in the country was beautiful. It was lively and full of green; and my grandma's sweet smile, which is easily one of my most favourite things in the whole world made everything better.
Home was a scenery I wanted to see forever.
As I tried to get some sleep in the tiny bed the company had provided, I couldn't help but feel incredibly sad and home sick.
A sniffle or two escaped from me as I tossed and turned on the hard mattress.
I was mad at myself. I left home with so much confidence...
But night comes and I was still just a kid. An awkward, scared and shy kid who does not fit here in this busy city.
As I wrestled with my emotions, I heard faint footsteps towards me. Someone lightly taps me on the head and I turned over in silence.
And I saw a boy.
The dark room made it hard for me to see his face properly but he looked like he was a trainee too.
"Hey.." he whispered,
"I noticed you were moving around a lot. Can't sleep?"
I nodded.
I don't know if he even saw it but he continued,
"I can't either. Want to go out to the terrace and have some snacks?"
He looked too young to be suspicious and snacks sounded like a good idea. So, I nodded yes again.
Before I knew it, we were out on the terrace of the small apartment; seated on two plastic stools with a huge amount of snacks between us. A huge amount as in......HUGE.
There were chips, candy bars, dried fruits, wafers, yogurt and fruit drinks.
This was a mini party!
I looked up at my companion. The street lamps and window lights from the apartments around us made it easier to see him properly now.
He was grinning from ear to ear as he started opening the snacks one by one. He looked like a little kid doing this and being all bubbly but I figured we were of the same age.
He looked good. A lot better than me anyway. He looked like a real Idol already.
I felt a sudden rush of insecurity as I looked down at my shabby t-shirt and yellow flip flops.
"Your name's Taehyung, right?"
He spoke so suddenly that it startled me.
"Uh..yes. yeah. Taehyung."
"Um..How did you know?"
He was stuffing a big piece of potato chip as he answered,
"Well.. our PD introduced you earlier, you know? I was a bit late but I barely made it. I was way at the back."
I did conversed with a few other trainees my age at the office earlier and would have remembered his face if I saw him there.
"Go on.. help yourself to the snacks. There's lots for both of us."
"T-thank you, ah...ummm?"
"Jin. Seokjin. That's my name. You can call me hyung though." And he flashed a smile.
A hyung? This thin boy in a Super Mario pink t-shirt and matching pokemon printed, also pink boxers? He was the pinkiest guy I've ever met. And he was trying to shove down the remnants of his potato chips in one go as I speak.
"..umm..thank you,hyung..for the snacks."
"Eat as much as you want. You'll need your energy tomorrow."
He smiled yet again, his eyes forming crescents.
He then went back to chewing furiously but turned around sharply a moment later,
"We'll be working real hard here, you know? And don't cry alone like you did tonight. If you're sad, You can talk to me or any of the other boys. They're all pretty cool. Also, we can have snacks like this again and talk about it. Ok? "
That took me by surprise. His concern and kindness felt so sudden and awkward considering we met just a few minutes ago.
But it was sweet..
And I was grateful for it.
And I needed it alot that night.
"Thank you again, hyung." I manage to force down my smile.
I had made my first friend and that filled me with a warm, almost 'homely' feeling. All I heard next was the sound of munching from both my midnight friend and I.
I looked around at the city lights and all the apartment windows. People were still up even though it was already 1 AM..
The city is different from home. It's so busy and it's so loud.
Will I ever learn to like this kind of scenery? I can only wait and see.
Hiya there, fellow ARMYs
