Chapter 14: Being Told Different

After a week, Jason and I were heading to our first appointment for our little baby. My mom has let us eat again, once she found out that ‘we’ aren’t pregnant, I was thankful. I was getting getting bigger but luckily it's getting cold so wearing bigger clothes is normal. I haven’t gained any weight, my pregnancy symptoms started after my last appointment with my mom for the ‘birth control’. I went downstairs to grab some water, waiting for Jason.

“Hi sweety, what are you doing up so early?” Mom asked. She looked like she was making something but she hid it with her body when she saw me.

“Um, I have dance class early this morning. What are you making?” I tried to look over her to see.

“I’m going to be making some egg whites with fruit and avocados.” She was still trying to hide what she was doing.

“Ok? But I won’t have time for breakfast. I might be here for lunch, maybe?” I grabbed a water from the fridge when someone started knocking on the door.  “That’s my ride. Bye mom.” I walked over to the door and opened it and were stood Jason.

“Bye sweetie.” I walked out the door to Jason’s car. Once in the car, we started heading towards the clinic.

“My mom was acting weird before I left.” I confessed. I may not have told him what my mom does to me, but I can at least tell him this. I trust my mate with my life.

“Weird how?” Jason gave me a confused look.

“I don’t know. I came downstairs and when my mom saw me, she immediately hid whatever she was doing. She claimed she was just making breakfast, but why would she hide it?”

“That is weird. Maybe you should talk to Hope about it, maybe she’ll know?” I shook my head.

“I doubt it, but I’ll talk to her about it when I get home later.” We pulled up to the clinic and made our way in.

“Ahh, Callie and Jason, it’s nice to see you.” The doctor said, once we had been all checked in. He took us back into a room. I was kind of nervous, I’ll be honest. Mostly because I’m not sure how my baby is doing health wise because of my not eating. “Alright, so we are going to do an ultrasound to see how far along you are.” I got up on the table and lifted up my shirt and unbuttoned my pants. The doctor tucked a paper type sheet into my pants so the gel didn’t get on them. “Alright, now this is going to be a little cold.” He then proceeded to squirt the gel on my small belly and I shivered. The doctor turned on the screen and grabbed the doppler, placing it on my stomach. Immediately, a small sac showed up on the screen. “There's your baby.” The doctor pointed out a small little bean in the sac.

“It’s so little.” I said. Suddenly we started hearing the heartbeat and I immediately started crying. I looked over at Jason and he was crying too, I grabbed his hand. My doctor took the doppler off my belly, turned off the screen and cleaned the gel off my stomach.

“It looks like you are about 8 weeks right now. But I am concerned about your weight.” He looked over my chart. I knew I was too fat, no wonder my mom has me on this diet.

“Yeah I know I could drop a couple of pounds. I was working on it before I knew I was pregnant.” Jason and the doctor gave me a strange look.

“No, you actually are underweight. When the nurse checked you in and took your weight you only weighed 90 pounds. With your weight, it is recommended to be at least 110 pounds or more. Based on your BMI you’re at a 15.4, we need you to gain some weight, which I know will be heard with some of your symptoms.” It was my turn to have a strange look on my face. My mom told me I needed to be a certain weight and my max was 100 pounds. Why is someone else saying something different.

“Umm, yeah I’ll do my best.” I knew better than to say anything. I wasn’t about to get my mom in any trouble because she told me something differently. She’s just looking out for what's best for us.

“Now tell me why you think you need to lose weight?” My doctor asked, folding his arms across his chest. Jason was also waiting to hear my answer.

“I wasn’t sure how much I actually weighed. I figured I was probably on the heavier side.” I lied. Jason looked at me like I was insane.

“There is no way that you thought you were on the heavy side.” Jason said. He was not happy with my answer, obviously, and I didn’t see him dropping this subject anytime soon.

“Listen Callie, if there's something going on, you need to tell me so I can help you. So I can make sure not only that you are healthy and safe, but also your baby.” I sat there for a second after hearing the doctor.

“No, nothing is going on. I was just confused or mistaken about about my situation. You know mom brain.” I laughed it off, but I was the only one laughing. “Listen Jason, you have to take me home now before my mom starts calling me.” I made up a lie quickly just so we get off the subject.

“Of course. Thank you, doctor.” Jason said and walked out of the room without me.

“I'm serious Callie, if there's something going on, you need to tell someone. If not me, at least your boyfriend. Also, have him stop for you to get some prenatal vitamins. Just pass them off to your mom as trying to get your hair healthy, since that’s one of the perks.” I nodded, thanked the doctor and headed towards the direction of Jason. He had already went to the car and was standing outside of it.

“I don’t want to talk about it. Here are the keys, go ahead and drive yourself home. I need to go for a run and clear my head.” Jason said. I felt bad. I should tell him about my mom, but I didn’t want to hurt my mom's feelings.

“Ok. I need to stop by the store and get some vitamins, if thats ok.” Jason nodded, gave me a kiss on the cheek and ran towards the woods. I sighed, got into the car and headed towards the nearest store. Once I got my vitamins, I started heading towards home. I wasn’t sure where Jason wanted me to park the car, so I just parked it on the side of my house kind of behind a tree. I walked inside and smelt something really good, and it wasn’t my mate. It was food. I followed my nose to the kitchen and saw that my mom was making some BLT sandwiches for lunch.

“Honey! How was dance?” My mom asked, once she saw me.

“It was good. It was great to start dancing again.” I lied. I just stared at the sandwich, waiting for permission to take it.  Mom finally handed me only half of the sandwich, but I took it happily and started eating it.

“Someone is hungry.” My mom said. I looked at her and mentally rolled my eyes. I wonder why.

“So mom, I looked up some information about somethings and I saw for my height that I should be at least 110 pounds, but you told me something different.” Mom’s eyes widen slightly before she went back to smiling.

“I know what’s best for you sweety. Being the weight you are right now is perfect for now. There's no need to worry about what something says online that you are supposed to be. Do you think you would get punished so much if I didn’t know what was right for you?”

“I guess so.” I finished my sandwich, cleaned up my mess and then headed up to my room. I didn’t like my moms answer to what I had to say, especially when a medical professional tells me something different. I looked out my window and saw that Jason’s car was gone. He didn’t even say goodbye to me. I got on to my bed and slightly started crying, ending up falling asleep.
