I miss the days I spent as a child.
To me the world was small.
Full of good people who loved each other equally
I long to run through the fields of grass without a care
Or to sit under a tree with pinecones in my hair
Those were the days of growth.
The calm before the storm.
Each moment I took for granted,
Every lesson I ignored,
I've come to regret.
For today I see the world with different eyes.
I can't blot out the darkness in my mind.
Or stay up all night with my imaginary friends.
I can't just believe.
I have to question and learn,
Strive and fight,
For a life.
My parents shouldered the burden,
They knew I would one day soon awake to a world that I at times am too ashamed to look at.
But my hopeful bright eyes and the memories I have now,
Make me think they were right to.
We kiss our childhood goodbye.
Send it away to die instead of treasuring it.
We watch things that scare it,
Call it too innocent and stupid,
Until it shrivels away leaving us with regret.
Our world isn't perfect but if we could hold our smiles, like a child,
We could chase our nightmares away.
