The skeg end of the board dragged and gouged a long zig-zagged line in the sand behind him.

Max turned and looked back at his last pupil of the day.  He chuckled because, by this point, the poor guy barely had the strength to lift and carry it properly.  He was exhausted and struggling twenty paces behind.

He walked back and swung his arm around Toey's board. Max carried both until they reached the surf shack another sixty meters up the beach.  Toey watched his back as Max shook his hair and a spray of droplets arced out and splashed in every direction.  Max began running.

Toey was bone-weary but more than anything,  he was...  Akaw!

  Akaw!

He couldn't believe he managed his first 360.  Amped,  he couldn't wait for his next lesson.  He was also dazzled by his teacher's strength. Max had swum out to the waves with him on every attempt and even more,  Max followed along the times when Toey got up on the board and caught his perfect breaker.

"You did great today Nong.   A few more lessons and you'll be out there on your own."  Max shook him by the shoulder and tugged on his ear.

"Thanks, P'Max,  thanks a lot."

Despite being tired, Toey's face was bright with a smile.  He did a fist pump and then pushed his wet hair from his eyes.

Max's praise was hard-won, and every bit as exciting as successfully doing his first board trick.  For Toey,  today turned out to be stellar.

As soon as they stepped in,  Toey grabbed the board that Max had so kindly carried for him,  he leaned it on the door jam.  He then took Max's prize gingerly out from under his other arm and stood it on its end.  It was a custom-made Aloha-longboard and the kind that is only a dream for most wave-riding enthusiasts.

"I'll put these away in the storage slot for you P', and I'll see you next week."

"Sweet Nong, but be careful with handsome. He's my baby."
