Niichi shoved Deek past the surfboard waxing station, past the shop's short sandy driveway, and to a shaded spot under a clump of trees. There were rocks to jump over to get to the sandy spot.  Ten degrees cooler,  it was a place perfect for eating lunch.

They'd worked together all morning and both had completely avoided any further talk of kissing and holding hands.  Luckily for them,  the customers kept coming.  It left little time for more than flirty glances.

Deek had only just kicked his shoes off,  when Niichi's exclamation came. He repeated Deek's question to Max, verbatim.

"Would you say holding hands with someone you like, comes before kissing?"

Niichi handed Deek the small cardboard box that his food was in.
"When you say,  'someone you like'... does that mean you like me? ...you like me back?"

Deek answered Niichi two ways. One was with an affirmative nod, and the other, a resounding, vocalized, "yes!"

Niichi glared into Deek's face.  His chest rose and fell.   All of a sudden it was Niicchi who went quiet.  He dropped down on the sand with his legs crossed.  He toyed with the elastic band holding his lunch-box closed.  He let out a long-held sigh.

Deek saw his shoulders go gooey.

"Niichi? What's wrong?"

"Nothing, nothing, I just didn't know what you were going to say."

Niichi stammered again: "I'm...  I've liked you for so long...  I'm really happy."

Niichi was looking at the food box, or possibly the sand, he definitely wasn't looking at Deek. "You know Deek, you're not easy to read."
