The doors at the top of the stairs didn't creak, but the handle clicked if you didn't hold it just right. Min heard the sound and opened her eyes. She wasn't asleep yet anyway.
She looked at the alarm clock. The new day was only an hour old.
Ten must have been in his sock feet because she could barely hear him as he tip-toed down the hall. His bedroom was the biggest and at the end. Two tall wooden doors with arched tops stood locked there. Min detected the sound of him setting his suitcase down, but she didn't hear his key in the door.
Min's bed squeaked when she tried to get out of it. She waited to make sure Ten didn't hear. She pressed her ear to the wood and listened as he knocked quietly at Teena's room.
She opened her own door, just a crack, and could see Tenten waiting in the dark for his sister to answer.
Light spilled out into the hallway when Teena pulled her door back and he stepped in.
Min could only catch the low rumble of his voice as he talked. She came out of her room and tried again. Min had to move right next to Teena's door to hear what he was saying.
Her own thundering heart and breathing overpowered his low tone. Min held her breath.
"She can't stay here forever."
"What am I supposed to do with her?"
"Tell her she has to leave."
"I can't do that. She's got nowhere to go. You know her P',... loose cannon."
"What do you mean? Tell her to go home to her mom and dad."
"They don't want her. They liked Max, and she humiliated them. They think he's some kind of angel and she's a fuck-up."
"Watch your language."
Min heard the brother and sister shuffle. It gave her the impression the Ten moved closer to Teena.
"Do you see what I mean? She's a bad influence. I don't want my sister talking so nasty."
"Nevermind that. Why are you so late? You said you would be back three days ago. What about the hospital?"
"It's none of your business, but I stayed in Bangkok longer than I thought."
"Tell her to get her stuff ready and I'll get my bud's van again. We'll take her back to her house."
"Are you crazy? Max won't allow that. He'd probably call the police."
Min choked on her own gasp. As fast as she could and as stealthily, Min got back inside her room and closed the door. She hurried to cover herself and feign sleeping. She was afraid that Tenten heard her after he said: "Max moved out. The house is empty. He's living better than he ever has in Tul's beach house."
