Toey sat up fast and gawked out the windows. The sun was setting and Bangkok was still three hours away. He could see that by the dashboard clock.
"Oh god, I fell asleep. P'Max would be so mad at me right now. He made me promise that I would keep you awake."
His Uncle had music playing and his window open. Tul smiled. "That was a good sleep."
He yawned and looked in the mirror. Toey fussed with his hair. "Uncle, I'm thirsty."
"I bought drinks. They're in the back, behind you on the seat."
Toey reached into the bag and grabbed one without reading the label. He popped it open and came close to spitting it out and on his Uncle's car floor. "Oy! What is that? It's disgusting."
He held the can to the failing light and then handed it to Tul. "This must be for you. I know you didn't buy it for me."
He watched Tul take a sip of the melon and guava drink, swallow and smile.
"You seem happy Uncle. Are you thinking about your show?"
Toey waited for the correct amount of time to pass before he added his smarty-remark. "Or P'Max?"
Typical of Tul, he gave back as slyly as he received. "Why are you so tired? Did Nong'Ohm keep you up last night?"
Tul was sure he won this round. Toey shrunk in his seat and his ears burst into a flowery shade of crimson.
The boy was still slouched down but he turned his head toward his Uncle and watched him concentrate forward on the highway. "He didn't keep me up late, but, we did wake up early."
Tul said nothing as Toey stared him down.
Toey now spoke in an offhanded way. He popped open a second drink. It was far more to his liking.
"Your agent lady sure picked a bad time, didn't she?"
Tul pushed the button that would close his window. He turned the dial on the airconditioning to hi. "It's getting hot." He pulled at his shirt to fan himself.
"Don't be embarrassed Uncle. I can't say no to Ohm either."
Tul drove for a full minute before saying anything. He gripped and squeezed Toey's knee. "I miss this."
