August 2019...
Good morning world, I sarcastically say to myself as I wake up to the sound of my alarm, my eyes stinging from the sun's rays shining through my glass window. After silencing my phone, I look at the calendar, only to remember what today is: The first day of school.
After breaking away from my thoughts, I slowly wake up and begin to make the bed, my eyes threatening to close any second. After 5 min or so, I trudge to my bathroom to take a closer look at myself in the mirror. My dark hair looks like a mini bird's nest, my dark brown eyes are glassy and hollow-looking, and my face looks puffy. A part of my shirt is up, revealing my stomach.
You know, I wish I could just sleep for an entire day without anyone interrupting. That'll work some real wonders.
After brushing my teeth and taking a shower, I wrap a towel around my body and begin walking to my walk-in closet, when a shrill voice began to call my name. "Kanna, 8:15 aizhuthu (it's 8:15)! Come fast!" My mom yells, her voice booming across the hall
"Varen (I'm coming)!" I yell back, running like a maniac around my room trying to get ready.
Not having any time left to lose, I immediately pick out my favorite pair of black jeans and a white embroidered off-shoulder top. After making sure my outfit is put-together, I grab my hairbrush and run it through my hair. And as you can tell, when you sleep with your waist-length hair open and run a brush through the plethora of tangles,
It hurts like hell.
After holding back some tears, I put my hairbrush down, leave the room, and run down the stairs, trying to avoid falling on my face as I tie it in a side braid.
I reach the first floor, where the delicious aroma of garam and noodle masala fills my nose. I look inside the kitchen to see my mom making some pasta.
YES!!! MY FAVORITE LUNCH.
My mom must have heard my stomping because she turns around, giving me a look of panic. "PO! Perumal valakku yethu (Go! Light the candles at the shrine)!" I go to the Perumal mode, where I clap two times and open the door.
I used to not understand why I had to clap twice before opening the shrine. But apparently, because they have sleep cycles like us, the claps wake them up. Isn't that kinda rude though? Like waking someone up with a clap?
Eh, whatever. All this religious stuff is too complicated to think about in the mornings.
God, if you're hearing this, please don't give me a crappy day.
After quickly praying for the typical things, such as a good day at school, no drama, and just being better than yesterday, I put the incense stick inside its designated holder and leave the shrine.
Considering the small amount of time I have, I run to my pantry to take out some Nutella, and I cook a piece of Roti, and I make a roti roll and stuff it into my mouth as I go to put on some mascara and lip balm.
"Okay Ma, I'm ready," I assure her as I put on my sandals, my mom keeping an amused expression the entire time.
"Tia, chew kanna. You look like a squirrel," I raise an eyebrow at her and begin to chew, my mom giggling insanely and she playfully pokes my cheeks. "Stopppp," I whine playfully as I open the garage door and she follows me to her car.
Although I can drive and I have a license, my mom drops me at school, because I'm still in the process of choosing "the one".
And also because she doesn't trust me driving yet.
I mean, I totally see why. When I first drove my dad's car, I accidentally hit a light post.
But that's a story for another time.
After 5 min or so, I arrive at school, stopping right in front of the school sign. After going to the parking lot, I get out of the car and say bye to my mom before walking towards the front entrance.
My school, Royalwood High School, is a pretty new place. It opened in 2016, right before I started eighth grade. And you can tell it's new. With giant glass windows and a brick finish, the sunlight just soaks in.
I really like the-
Oh, wait. Someone is here!
"WASSUP," someone from behind says, the deep-ass voice immediately giving it away.
"WASSUP," I say back to the person before she comes to my right side.
Wait a minute, I didn't even tell you who this person is.
Let me give you an introduction to my favorite person in the world: Vinita Manoharan.
Vinnie and I have been friends since kindergarten, yet many people just can't believe we're friends. Even I can't understand why since we're polar opposites.
I'm serious. Vinnie may seem adorable and innocent with her big eyes and giant smile, but she's the perfect example of a wolf in sheep's clothing. She's sarcastic, brutal, blunt, and defiant. She is not afraid to tell you the truth when it's needed.
Meanwhile, I can't even talk to someone without feeling that I'm gonna hurt their feelings by accident.
"You ready?" she asks, and I shake my head in response. Vinnie cackles and says, "No, same. Bro, I heard we got Callahan for APUSH."
"Thank God," I say before continuing, "I heard he's really good."
"He better be. I already hate History," Vinnie complains as she adjusts her dark green crop top and fixes her hair.
"Shut up. You're so good at History. I don't think you've gotten a single B," I argue as she rolls her eyes.
"Eh, I mean I may be good at it, but it's my worst out of all the subjects."
"Says the girl who's ranked in the top 5%."
"Says the girl who's NUMBER ONE," Vinnie quips, making me raise an eyebrow.
"You want a microphone? I don't think the whole world heard that," I scold her as she chuckles.
But before we can continue talking, someone taps my shoulder from behind me.
Huh, I wonder who that is.
The person taps again, but I still have no idea who that person is. Vinnie is looking back with a little smirk, but she's not saying anything.
After tapping again, the mysterious person finally loses it and says,
"You're so mean, can't you at least say hi?" the deep voice rings in my ears, instantly making me recognize this person.
And it's the one guy who makes school the circus it is.
