"Happy birthday, Tee!" Amulya wishes me through WhatsApp video call as I smile in response. I'm chowing down on some Cheerios and dates as fast as I can right now because Meera's Mehendi pooja is happening in about 20 minutes. I already got calls from Vihaan, Kat, and Samiya, so now it's Amulya's turns.
"Thanks, Muly!" I respond with my mouth super muffled and she laughs at me. "What's going on over there?" she asks me as I quickly put my cup in the sink.
"Nothing much, Meera's Mehendi is coming up right now. So I'm just going to get ready for that soon," I tell her and she starts getting excited.
"Ohh, what are you planning on wearing?" she asks me eagerly and I just laugh before I grab my phone and go to my individual suite.
"I'm wearing this," I maneuver the outfit towards the camera to make it easier to see and her face starts forming into the star-struck emoji. "That's so cute! What are you wearing for the sangeet then?"
"You know that coffee brown lehenga I have?"
"The sparkly one with the tan dupatta?"
"Yup."
"Ooo, that one is so pretty! Who's doing your makeup then?" she asks me as I cover the camera to change into my outfit. I don't even have to tell Muly because she'll already know.
"Deepa's busy with Meera's makeup, so Vinnie and I are getting ready together! I'm doing makeup, she's doing hair," I explain enthusiastically as I change out of my PJs into my Mehendi outfit.
I'm wearing a bottle green and ivory kurti palazzo set. Palazzo pants are wide-legged pants that can be worn as anything and with anything. The kurti is bottle green with complex floral embroidery, and the palazzo pants are ivory with dispersed floral patterns in different shades of green. That's all tied up with a patterned green and ivory dupatta!
"Nice, nice. Accessories?" Crap, I forgot I'm still on the call!
I'm not telling her that, though.
"Eh, you know. Just the diamond set I got from Tanishq and some mallipoo (jasmine flowers)," I think about it for a second and Amulya just scoffs.
"Dang, just your $1700 diamond set? Come on, you can do way better than that!" she sasses me and I just roll my eyes and laugh. "Just kidding. That sounds super cute! Send me pics of everything!" she requests and I finally uncover my camera.
"You look so good! Once you do your hair and put on your makeup and jewelry, you'll look so pretty," she admires me and I just take a bow.
"Ammu! Ennuku chai panni kudkuriya (can you make chai for me)?" Muly's mom calls her from downstairs and she clenches her teeth.
"I gotta go, but I'll talk to you later, ok? I need to know how your date with Neil went!" she chirps but I immediately calm her down. "It's not a date though. It's a 'hangout sesh' apparently," I quote him before I start waving my hair and applying my makeup.
Since it's a morning mehendi, I'm going pretty light on the makeup this time. But for the sangeet, I'm going all-in when it comes to the makeup.
After doing some skincare, I skip foundation and just apply some mascara and pink lip gloss. Oh, and don't forget some perfume. After adding some waves to my hair, I quickly put it in a ponytail.
After putting on my jewelry, I'm finally ready!
"Sure, let's just pretend it's a hangout sesh," she quips and I just start whining. "I don't know! I mean, he said that it's a date. But what kind of date is it?" I lose my crap as I grab the phone again to exit the room.
