A few hours later...

"What is a sole proprietorship?" Vinnie looks at Quizlet on her phone as she helps me review our event terms.

"Isn't that when one person owns a company?" I think to myself for a second and a big smile forms on her face to tell me I'm right.

"Bingo! I don't see why you're so worried. You've gotten every single word right so far," she gives me a high five and she puts her phone down.

The team events are going to be in the upper ballroom, so we're just sitting here with Vihaan and Jacob, reviewing our terms until the others get back from getting some breakfast.

The event times are different for everyone, so it can be either right after the opening ceremony or even a few hours after that! So it's always important to be prepared. Vinnie and I have our event at 12:45 along with Vihaan and Jacob, so we have around 4 hours until it starts.

I know that it's a bit tryhard to review two hours before your event happens, but the last thing I want is to forget everything when I go for my event.

That's gonna be as bad of a nightmare as having an accident.

At least I can change my pads. I can't change time even if I try!

Thank god, I started looking at this Quizlet list 2 days ago. But don't tell anyone that.

"You know me and stuff like these. Once we shake the judge's hand, I'm pretty sure all of this prep will go boop!" I use sound effects and some hand motions since I'm weird.

"Right, that reminds me. We need to work on our handshake, bro," she tells me as she pretends to spit in her hand and she sticks it out. I cackle hard and I do the same and we both shake each other's hand.

So for DECA, our competition is known as a role-play. Nope, we don't wear costumes or do anything like that. But that sounds super fun.

In a role-play, the judge and competitor(s) are assigned a role to play that has to do with a competitor's event. For example, Vihaan and Jacob are doing Sports and Entertainment Marketing, so the judge could be like the head of a sports team while those two could be new marketing agents. It's variable for everyone depending on your event.

In the role-play, they give you 4-6 points that you have to talk about, aka Performance Indicators. You have to mention each one, or you won't get the points for the event. These PIs are each classified into topic clusters, such as Emotional Intelligence, Customer Relations, or even Communication Skills.

I admit it sounds like a bunch of word vomit right now, but once you practice it a few times, you get the hang of it. It's just like any other conversation.

"If you're going to shake the judge's hand like that, you might as well get a first aid kit," Vihaan jokes while I notice that Vinnie's hand is now red from me squeezing so hard. Vinnie has super high pain tolerance, so she doesn't even flinch.

"Shoot, I'm so sorry!"

"It's okay, it's okay. I didn't even feel it. But that judge is gonna probably get their hand broken if you do that," she laughs while trying to bring her hand back to normal.

"Don't be so nervous, Tee. You're really smart, and we both prepared a lot for this. Just have fun and let loose, ok?" she pats my shoulder and shakes it. I smile big just like her and she gives me a hug

"I'm going to go to the restroom for a quick minute. Can you watch my stuff?" I ask her after I grab my pouch containing my pads.

"Yup. Make sure you put it in properly though," she whispers and I roll my eyes with a smile.
