[A/N: Sorry for the delay again. We're discussing moving again within the next two months or so. I'll be focusing on getting things packed and ready, but will try my best to keep writing!]
Daenerys reaches out to Rhaegal, stroking his scaly nose as she stares up at him with worried eyes. Rhaena stands near her, watching the mother care for her child. Rhaegal purrs against her hand. He looks incredibly weak. Rain watches him shift his weight from one of his tattered wings to the other several times, like they can no longer bear his weight. He moves uncomfortably, taking to laying himself in a snowy bank once Dany is finished with checking him. In an instant, the dragon is asleep and breathing heavily from his deep slumber, the stress on his wings no longer bothering him. Dany moves to Rain's side, keeping her eyes fixed on her sleeping child solemnly. Rain wishes she knew how long it takes a dragon to cover from such terrible wounds. She knows her cousin needs to return to Dragonstone as quick as possible.
Drogon grunts and moves to his brother, sniffing him as Dany speaks. "Part of me wishes I had not come to help." Her face is full of pain as she says her heavy words, but Rain understands. "But if I hadn't, it would be just like as Jon told me. I'd be ruling over a graveyard. Yet, all of those corpses make me feel like I already am."
Rain frowns and looks down. She isn't sure what to say at all. She reaches for Dany's hand and holds it, squeezing it once before looking back up at her. "You will win this war. If only one of your children is able to assist you in that matter, then so be it." She shrugs lightly. "You will win because of your kind nature and your want to care for the innocent. No matter what, the people will do away with Cersei once they see the opportunity."
Dany looks at her and nods once. Though when she looks back to Rhaegal, Rain does not feel satisfied that she's cheered her up. Her other hand drifts to her stomach that still lies flat. She's gotten her confirmation that new life blooms in her and wants to feel happy, but something in her mind is preventing her from feeling it. Perhaps it's that she feels she may as well be rubbing it in her cousin's face. The fact that Dany can never again have children depresses her, being greatly accelerated by her pregnant brain.
"I have something exciting to share." Rain attempts to say cheerfully, but it comes out sounding uncertain. Dany looks at her, her violet eyes dropping to Rain's hand on her stomach. A smile spreads on her face and she looks joyfully at her cousin. "I'm going to be more careful this time. I promise."
"That's wonderful." Dany hugs her briefly. "I'd hoped you would help us in the fight against Cersei, but I understand it would be much too risky now." She sounds somewhat disappointed, but keeps her smile on her face. Rhaena nods, disappointed in her own way, feeling like she's somehow failed her already by not being able to fight. Dany looks again to Rhaegal. The great green dragon snores away, the heat of his breath exiting his nose blowing gently against them, with the cold air mixing with it. "I hope he can recover in the coming weeks. I need him with me when we attack King's Landing." Her voice drops from it's hopeful tone suddenly. "Without him, without Drogon, what would I be? Just another usurper in the eyes of the people. Such extraordinary creatures. And without them, I would just be like everyone else."
Targaryens had dragons, the source of their power and control. No one would ever dare, not now or then, rise up against them for fear of burning in a hellish torrent of flame. Rain looks upon Rhaegal and the great gashes visible on his chest just under his curled head. They still appear fresh though the blood has stopped. "Perhaps Dragonstone would be a better place for recovery, rather than in the freezing cold." Rain tells her. "Wouldn't the warm climate do a dragon better?" She pauses and looks at her cousin. She remembers how peaceful the dragons were when there were three. Always outside of her chamber window, she saw them nestled in the grassy plateaus or soaring through the misty air. "When he can fly, perhaps he should go with you."
Daenerys nods once. "It's the same thing I'd been thinking." She pats Drogon's nose when his face lowers down to her height. "He bonded with Jon. I thought of allowing Rhaegal to stay with him, while Drogon went with me... I'd like them both with me."
Rhaena agrees with a soft smile. "It will be done, then."
Daenerys parted ways from Winterfell a fortnight later, after her small party of Unsullied assured her that they were ready for more battles to come. Rhaegal took to the air that day, flying over Winterfell as Dany readied her horse and as Rain and Jon prepared to say their goodbyes. Light from the partially covered sun shined through the healing holes in his wings as he soared beside his brother eagerly. Though, to Rain's internal despair, Rhaegal flew jaggedly beside him. He let out several sudden chirps that had her believing he was falling from the sky, but he never did. It looked as if the dragon relished flight once more after being grounded for so long. Even Jon smiled lightly beside Rain as he glanced up at them. Rain embraced Dany tightly before she rode out of those gates as regal as a Queen can ride. The two would begin their own journey south in just a few days, and Rain prayed for safety to be given to both parties while entering the dangerous South, for the Lion Queen has no doubt laid deadly traps for them all.
