#29 - Waiting

"Hey, Shinichi.. We've been friends for like.. quite a while now, right?" Kaito asked the other male with a slight nervous look. Shinichi set his book to his lap before giving Kaito his entire attention with a raised eyebrow. "I guess so.. Uh.. Why are you asking this so suddenly..?" Shinichi asked.

"It's just.. I tried so hard to be your friend and be just your friend but it's hard. Do you.. get what I mean?" Kaito tried to say but Shinichi tilted his head to one side in confusion. "Uh.. I think you lost me for a moment there, Kaito. What are you trying to say?" he asked again.

Kaito looked at his fingers and fiddled with them for a while. Shinichi noticed the nervousness intensify itself tenfold. "Is it okay to you if we're not normal friends anymore, Nichi? Is it okay if we be something more than that?" he asked with a hopeful tone.

More than just normal friends? Shinichi had thought. As in.. dating kind..? His breath hitched when the thought finally get into his mind. He felt time slowed down as he stared at Kaito, who's looking even nervous as silence stretched between them.

"I.. Kaito.. It's.. I'm.." he really tried to find his wordings right but feel absolutely and utterly loss, trying to find something right to say. He didn't want to hurt Kaito's feelings by all means. It's not that he didn't want to date Kaito either. It's complicated.

When he and Ran had first started dating, their relationship didn't really last that long between them. The idea of dating each other after the piling lies and secrets were nauseating him. He couldn't do it to Ran, not after hurting her again and again. So he let her go. She's happier now, dating with Dr. Araide.

He once thought he would marry her but after all of this happening around him, that dream was lost somewhere between all those pain he 0ut her through. He wasn't an ideal boyfriend anyways. He was too much dedicated into his work and he often forgot their dates and he didn't know how to treat her much as a boyfriend to his girlfriend.

But with Kaito.. After the fall of the Black Organisation, Kaitou KID was no longer in danger and he retained his target soon after, destroying the gem named Pandora. Meeting with Kaito was absolutely unplanned and it took him by complete surprise. They both attended the same college together with Heiji and Saguru with them respectively.

Kaito was an interesting male to be around with, that's for sure. Shinichi never felt annoyed by his presence even though the younger was quite loud and didn't seem to know what personal space meant. All these time, Shinichi never thought of dating anyone else after he and Ran fell out of love with each other.

The magician understood him like no others even without words spoken between them. They seemed to be able to read each other's minds without trying too hard. Kaito was very intellectual and Shinichi often had fun with him by battling their wits, much to everyone's amusement.

Yeah.. Shinichi never thought Kaito more than a friend all these times but he knew he felt something more with Kaito than when he was with Ran back then. He couldn't deny that he felt much happier and that he could be himself without any secrets around the wild haired male.

Shinichi realised that he hadn't answer Kaito's question yet before smiling a little weakly. "I.. I know you like me, Kaito.. To be honest, I like you too," he started. Kaito's hopeful smile dimmed slightly, making Shinichi's heart cracked. "I sensed a 'but' in your sentense, Nichi," he said.
