Josephine's P.O.V
Carter showed me into a room and I gulped. This activist stuff was feeling more and more real by the minute. There was a part of me that wanted nothing to do with this but there was also a part of me that wanted to be apart of this. To be apart of something that could change lives. For once I would be making a difference. No cheating involved. No lies.
"Now this is your room or what we like to call it here, you bunker." I looked around and shivered. This place felt more like a holding cell than a "bunker."
The part of me that wanted to run out of this place was winning right now.
Carter furrowed his brows at me and he looked so cute doing it. He reminded me of a lost puppy and I laughed. "Don't tell me you're getting cold feet now Jones."
He brushed a piece of hair out of my face. He held my gaze for what felt like a decade but was only for a minute. I looked away first and I already felt the heat creeping up in my cheeks. "So... you were saying"
"I get why you're scared. It's a new place that you have no idea what is going on or what's going to happen next." He held my hand and squeezed it. "But don't be."
I pushed him away and let go as if he was poisonous. My heartbeat picked up and I was having trouble breathing. He didn't seem to notice my discomfort or pretended not to notice. "Me? Scared? Not even a little."
"Oh really?" He challenged. "Because I could have sworn you looked like you were going to throw up a second ago. Burst into tears even."
He closed the space between us and looked down at me. I could feel his hot breath on my face. His strong cologne consumed my breath. I'm pretty sure my heart stopped working.
I noticed a nasty cut that stated from his ear and ran all the way down his neck. I reacted with the tip of my index finger. He held his breath but didn't say anything. It was fresh.
"What happened?" I whispered.
"I had an incident."
He was lying but I don't feel like it was my place to question any further.
"Right..."
All I could see was his dark eyes that matched so perfectly with his dark hair. Suddenly I forgot why we were here. Carter was about to say something but then a flash of light and heat past by us.
There was smoke around us and I realized the room was now on fire. Carter ran out of the room and returned with a fire extinguisher and put the fire out. I hadn't moved from my spot. I stayed there stunned by what just happened.
"What was that? Does everyone here what me dead or something?!"
Carter laughed and gave me an apologetic smile. "No that just means that were late. That was the warning."
"The warning?!"
"Yeah, we better get going." He took my stuff from my hands and ushered me out the door. "Don't worry about the mess we'll get someone to clean it up. It will look as good as new when you come back."
A messy room was the least of my worries right now.
There were dozens of people that varied in shapes and sizes. There were some people throwing punches at punching bags and punching dummies.
There was one girl that was probably about my age that was really going at her punching dummies. Then she did a swift sidekick knocking down the head of the dummy. It was so clean as if she had sliced it with a knife. I gulped and stood a little closer to Carter.
"Who is that?"
"She is your new partner."
I looked up at him. "You're kidding right?"
"No. I don't know what you're so worried about. She's a lot like you."
That's the point. She was everything like me but better.
"So what I'm I supposed to do first?"
"First you learn how to throw a knife." I tried to hide my laugh by coughing but I just made it worse and ended up laughing more. "Why would I need to throw a knife?"
Carter picked one of the knives up and threw it at me. I moved just in time before it hit me. But I still couldn't believe he just threw a knife directly at me.
"What the heck?!"
"Throwing knives teaches you to focus, detail, and speed. You always want to know where you are throwing your weapon."
There was a sickening feeling in my stomach. "Why?"
Carter looked at me with so much intensity I was certain I was going to take a piss on the spot. "You never want to miss because if you miss that means you're dead."
Carter was showing me how to punch properly and faster but I stopped when I saw him walk into the gym. Samuel Brown. The reason I'm in this mess in the first place.
Before I had a chance to register what I was doing. I marched over to him, letting my anger take the lead. I pushed him causing him to spill his coffee. "How dare you!!"
"Oh, it's you. Are you going to be a problem? Because I really don't like problems."
He was smiling at me which just made me even madder.
"Do you really think what you did was ok?!"
"I do whatever I need to do to get things done."
"You can't just do whatever you want!"
His smile widened. "Actually I can. Nice blue panties by the way. Blue is my favorite color."
My cheeks instantly grew hot. But how did he? Unless he? Oh. My. God. I slapped him across the face hard. He was stricken aback but he just looked at me. He didn't even nurse his cheek that was already imprinted with a huge red mark.
That had to hurt. But he wasn't showing any emotion. I didn't care. He got a piece of my mind and that was all I wanted.
I spun on my heel and walked away when a hand grabbed my shoulder. By instinct, I grabbed the hand that touched me and tried to twist the wrist until I could hear the cracking sound.
But they were too fast. They grabbed my left arm and twisted it. Then they pulled on it hard. Click. The pain was unbearable but I bit my tongue.
They pulled on my arm again and finished it off with a twist and finally left my arm go limp. I whimpered in reply.
I couldn't feel my arm. Hot tears trailed my face and I tried to hide my embarrassment but it was no use. Everyone saw it.
There was a hot, wet breath by my ear. I swallowed. "Acting on your emotions is what will get you killed." Samuel. Then he kicked my limp arm before walking off.
If you thought you hated Samuel before. You're definitely going to hate him now. Here's another chapter...
