Carter's P.O.V

Damn this guy was not giving me a break. I struggled to stand and as soon as I was on my feet he kicked me in the stomach again. My breath escaped my lips and I struggled for air. Blood spills from my battered mouth and I gritted my teeth at the pain.

The bruises that enclosed my face swelled. My head a throbbing time bomb. I spit out blood and got ready to take another hit. I wasn't even going to try and fight him anymore. I was lucky I didn't break any bones.

Yet.

The only thing I hoped for right now was that Luna wasn't caught and on her way to getting the files and I prayed that she would, at last, come for Josephine too. I could care less if I died here as long as Josephine got out alive.

He swung right underneath my chin. My jaw crushed against the weight and at least three of my teeth came loose. I gagged and winced at the pain. My blood hummed in my veins as fatigue and hopelessness took over.

My vision completely fades to black but I could feel that my body was still tender and dull from the beating. I don't even have the energy to get up anymore so I stare at the floor. Relaxing as the cold floor soothes my aching sharp skin.

The guard that was appointed to me grabbed me by the hair and lifts my head up.

"Now I'm going to ask you one more time Carter Williams. Why were you sent here? What do you know?"

I don't reply. He begins shouting words at me but my hearing fades out. Then I finally pass out.

Ten years ago......

We had just finished getting candy from the candy shop. I beamed. We weren't supposed to make any stops but I had begged. It was only fair. We were moving away to across the world and I didn't even get to tell anyone goodbye.

It was so sudden. My daddy just came home and told mommy something. Next thing I knew we were packing all of our stuff and we were out the door. My parents had been on edge for months now but I thought they were just stressed out about work.

I sucked on my lollipop and hummed as I skipped alongside my parents. Holding both of their hands. I looked up at them. My mommy smiled at me but it seemed forced. I looked over at my dad and he kept looking over his shoulder. His right hand was secured over his pocket.

I patted my mom on her thigh. "Are you okay?"

She squeezed my hand then kissed it. "Yes. Everything is an alright sweetie. We just don't want to miss our plane."

Now I felt bad. "Oh Sorry."

My dad chuckled. "No worries champ. A good old sweet treat never stopped anyone now did it? Can I have some of your lollipops?"

"I don't know.. It's going to cost you."

My daddy pretended to check his pockets for money. "How much?"

"Twenty dollars!"

"Twenty dollars! Who has that kind of money?!"

He picked me up with one arm and threw me up in the air. I giggled and dropped my lollipop on the floor but I didn't care.

He tossed me in the air again and caught me. He set me down on the floor then showered my face with kisses.

"I better not mess with this one." He told my mommy.

"He'll take all your money."

"I'm just trying to make some money."

My mom laughed and took my hand again. "You will one day my little cupcake. But not today."

"The airport is on the other side of the street." My dad replied. He gripped my hand just a little tighter.

"Come on. Let's go. Everyone hold hands."

"Samuel do you have the plane tickets?"

"Already have them out, Delilah."

My mom relaxed. "Good."

We were crossing the street and almost on the other side when a black van appeared out of nowhere.

It was coming at full speed and towards...

My mommy. Her eyes grew wide.

"Delilah!!" My father shouted. He moved towards her but it was too late.

Her head made contact with the hood of the car and her body followed soon after. The hold she had on my hand was released. The car didn't even bother to stop and drove over her body.

My dad raced over to her body, dragging me along with him. His eyes were filled with tears and it sounded like his voice had shattered.

I didn't even realize I was crying too. "Mommy?"

My dad cradled her body and ran his fingers through her hair.

He kept whispering it was going to be fine over and over in her ear. But I knew she was gone. I broke out in a sob and my dad pulled me into him, hugging me tightly. My mom had a huge red mark on her forehead and her eyes were closed.

Her body a tangled puzzle piece of crooked limbs.

My dad picked her up with his left hand and held mine in the other. A crowd had started surrounding us but my dad just pushed past them with a straight face. Even though I already knew the answer to the question I asked him anyway.

"Is Mommy going to be okay?"

My dad was about to reply when we heard tires screeching. The black van was back. A guy in a black ski mask rolled out the window and pulled out a gun. My dad tightened his hold on my hand and yanked me behind the nearest wall.

I heard bullets being shot and screams that followed. I closed my eyes shut.

"Okay, buddy. We just have to get is that building over there and we'll be safe. Can you do that for me?"

I opened one eye to stare at him. He gave me a sad smile.

I looked over at my Mommy's limp body in his hand. I nodded.

"Okay, ready Carter?" I don't think I really had a choice even if I wanted to be.

"Run! Carter run!"

My dad and I ran into the building and not once I looked back.
