Chapter 14

Carter's P.O.V.

The van had parked a couple of thousand blocks away from the Dark Horse's building or what my dad liked to call it, the cage.

But Luna and I were picked up by the company's helicopter and dropped off on the roof.

I had no idea where to start.

Even though we were coming in as a surprise to them, guards were always a hassle to deal with. I looked over to Luna who already looked like she had a plan.

"We have to split up."

"What book or movie did you see or read that let you know that was a good idea?"

"It's the only way we will be able to cover more ground so we could get the files and retrieve Josephine."

"I don't like this..."

She flipped her bright purple bangs out of her eyes. "You're pretty capable of handling this alone."

"It just doesn't seem like the best situation."

"Look there are two entrances here. One to my left and one to your right."

I sighed. "This building is huge. There's no way we will get everything in time. When we get inside they are eventually going to figure out we're here."

"And we're already wasting time talking right now."

I don't reply.

Luna grabbed my shoulders. "Trust me, Williams."

"Fine." I headed to the left entrance and she headed to the right.

"Be careful." We both said to each other in unison. We smiled at each other before disappearing behind the doors.

I was introduced to a long line of staircases. But no guards. I didn't know how long they were and when they would lead me to an exit but I pounded my way towards the steps not missing a beat. My heart flipped.

Here I come Josie.

I had been in the stairwell for what seemed like hours but was merely minutes. When I turn my head my eyes were faced at the barrel of a gun.

Dang, it.

"If you even move an inch I'll shoot your brains out."

I was already calculating how to take this guy out. I stepped back only to feel the back of my head make contact with another gun.

It's a huge risk if you try it, Carter.

A huge one but I decided to take it. I curled my hands into a fist and aimed for the guy that was in front of me. Punching him right in the stomach.

At the same time, I extend my right leg kicking the guy behind me in his abdomen. I dunked my head and somersaulted out of my trap. Shots rang out but not one bullet touched my skin.

Hallelujah.

I looked at the men on the floor. One had a bullet in his hip and was slowly bleeding out while the other had one on his forehead and was dead by sudden impact. I raced down the stairs but more guards came my way from in front and behind me.

For crying out loud where was the exit?

The woman in front of me gave me a nasty grin. My hands already in fists as I aimed for her noise and relaxed at the sound of her nose cracking. Her blood splattered all over my face and on the ground.

I spun on my heel quickly, grabbing the guard's gun and using it as a weapon against him. I smacked him on the head so hard that he fell to the floor with a thud. I kicked him to make sure he was not moving.

Just when I was about to get away from them. The lady returned jumping on top of my back. I could already hear the footsteps of more guards coming my way.

She hits me in the face, cutting my lip and I can taste blood. She grabs my head and digs her fingernails into my scalp. Stings of pain electrify my head and she deepens her hold.

Using her other hand she slams against my chest. She reaches for her pocket and pulls out a knife. She gets ready to plunge it into my heart. Right as I feel the tip of the blade puncture my skin I grabbed her by the hair and yanked hard.

She cries out and I grab her shoulders. I fight with her as she clings to my head. Finally, I grab a hold of her and throw her against the wall hearing a cracking noise. She falls to the floor unmoving.

My pace quickens and I try to find an exit but it seems like more and more people continue to come.

I was tired but I keep moving. My body ached and my arms were sore but I kept punching.

I have to get to Josephine. I have to save her.

I recoil as a punch hits my jaw, taking in the pain that would leave a fresh bruise. I hadn't seen that coming. I blink, but before I could react, I got punched in the nose.

My nose was never going to heal.

Using my senses I jabbed my elbow at soft flesh and a grunt followed.

Then I started running. I had finally finished the flight of stairs and found a door. I kicked it open, ready to dash inside but once again a gun was shoved in my face. I cursed and clenched my fist, letting my fingernails dig into my flesh.

I felt a gun being pressed to the back of my head. Then I remember the knife that my father had given me. It would surely work no doubt.

But how many more of them were coming? It seemed like everywhere I stepped someone was there, ready to try and take me down.

I should have gotten in undetected. Probably knock out just a few guards in silence. But they were ready. The Dark Horses knew that I was coming.

But how?
