Carter's P.O.V
My feet felt heavy and I was having a hard time walking up to my dad's office. He had called me and Luna up. That was never a good sign.
Usually when that happened bad news was delivered right after it. I really hope this didn't have anything to do with Josephine but what else could it be?
I finally got to the door of my dad's office and my hand stayed suspended in mid-air on top of the doorknob. Tears filled my eyes and I was scared.
If this was horrible news about Josephine would I be able to live with myself knowing that it was my fault she was here in the first place?
I should have told her to run when she had the chance instead of telling her how amazing this place was when it was anything but.
My hand gripped the doorknob and my hand began to hurt from how tight I was holding it.
As soon as I left the door was smacked in my face.
I doubled over and held my already sprained nose. Luna faced me. "I found him."
I groaned in reply.
"We don't have time for this Carter! This is an emergency! Get inside." I walked in and closed the door behind me.
"What is it?" I tried to hide the fear in my voice but I was terrified.
"Josephine has been kidnapped by the Dark Horses."
"What?!" Luna and I said in unison. Luna stiffened. This was the first time I saw her on edge.
"I need both of you to go and get Josephine back."
"We what are we waiting for?!" I spun on my heel and headed for the door.
"There's more." I stopped and faced Samuel again.
"While you guys are there it's going to be dangerous. I will be giving both of you the best equipment around."
He pulled out three small black beads from his desk, three silver bracelets, and three knives.
"The three beads are microphone chips so you guys are able to communicate and speak with each other without it being detected. There is a small button on the bracelets that pull out a lever that can break apart any lock or anything in general. The knives are magnetic. Whatever or whoever you throw them at, once they have hit their target they will return to your hand."
"When you guys are down there you will need to retrieve their files."
"Why?" I pondered. Everything about this was already odd. My dad had never sent agents to go save another.
He usually just let them die. It was too risky and would just lead to bigger messes. It would cause us to be vulnerable.
My dad sighed.
"We're at war Carter. We need to know what they are doing. What their next move is and makes sure that we stop them. If anything, find one of their recruits and get them to confess."
"We don't have much time. If you two are able to get the information you need but aren't able to save Josephine. Leave her."
"Got sir. Understood." Luna barked. I glared at her.
"We can't just leave her! We're going to get the information and Josephine. Why didn't you tell us any of this before? We were practically days away from going into combat without mortal enemies and you said nothing?"
"Carter I don't have time to explain. Please go. We are all running out of time."
Somehow I was able to leave the office, get into uniform, and leave the van. What was Luna and I walking into?
But most important of all.....
Was Josephine even alive?
