Sought and Snatched

Chapter 32

Josephine's P.O.V

Carter snuggles in my arms and I return the affection. I wasn't sure if I had dreamed it or not but Carter's eyes were half-open looking lazily across the room.

"Carter? Can you hear me?"

"Josephine is that you?"

"Yeah, it's me, Carter."

His hand barely wriggles free and reaches for mine. Carter was barely moving but there was raw emotion in the way his fingers curled around mine and the smile that etched onto his tired face.

"You're alive."

"Yes I am and I'm going to get you out of here."

I didn't have anything sharp on me to cut the leather that was holding him down and without thinking I started using my teeth to break it free.

After a grueling few minutes and a sore jaw, Carter is finally free. He flops to his side and I take a hold of his arms to help him up.

He looks at me his dark eyes shiny. "I was the one that was supposed to save you."

"I don't mind saving you. I'm stronger than you think."

"What did I do to get so lucky and meet someone as amazing as you?"

My cheeks grow warm and I turn away from him. Luna runs in and Venus is right behind her.

"Here we found this in the lab. Hopefully, this will help."

Luna pulls out a small vile filled with a blue liquid.

"Thanks."

I open it and put it to Carter's lips only for him to knock it out of my hands and scream. "No more! No more! Please stop. I can't take it."

I pull him towards my chest and cradle him side to side, whispering in his ear. "I'm not going to hurt you. No one's going to hurt you anymore."

"That was the only one we could find."

"It's okay. Let's just get him out of here."

We bolt out of the room and down the hallway. There are dozens of guards waiting with their guns pointed at us.

Venus steps in front of us. "Turn around and go to your right. There should be a circular latch on the floor that will lead you to an underground bunker. When there, get one of the keys, get a car, and get out."

Luna grabs onto Venus' arm. "I'm not leaving you here."

Venus kisses Luna lightly on the cheek. "You have to."

Luna grabs her hand anyway and we all run down the hallway. The guards and agents chase us down and I struggle to keep Carter upright. When I see the latch door on the floor I open it and put Carter down first then I go down.

I land on the pavement and grab any pair of keys hanging on the wall then I click on it until I find the car that it matches to.

We're almost there when four guards block our path.

"Stop!!"

I reach for my gun and they open fire. Venus jumps in front of us and uses herself as a human shield. Her body hits the floor and I pull out my gun shooting at them.

They all drop to the floor and I stand in disbelief. Carter gives me a lopsided grin. "Wow, you've gotten better."

Luna stared at Venus' body that was soaking in her own blood and I couldn't help but feel a little sorry for her. Then her body moves just a little.
