Josephine's P.O.V
The floor vibrated to the beat of the music. I tapped my heel gently near the punchbowl as I waited for Luna to give me my cue. Carter, Luna, and I had gone over the plan when he had picked Luna and me up from my house.
******
"Wow, you look gorgeous."
My cheeks tinged with warmth. "Thank you." Carter rushed over to open the door for me. My heart buzzed in my throat when I saw his fitted body in a tuxedo. My skin began to turn increasingly warm. Luna coughed.
"Oh right. You look good too Luna."
She rolled her eyes at him but squeezed in a small smile. "Let's just go over the plan."
"Carter will be on the roof to scan any suspicious activity. Luna, you will be in the halls being a lookout while I sneak into the principal's office. Then when I take a picture of the files and anything else I find we will all meet back at the limo."
"That sounds about right."
"So we're not going to do any dancing at all?" Carter whined.
I giggled. Luna rolled her eyes at him.
"I'll squeeze in a slow dance with you if there's time."
He threw a fist in the air and cheered. "Here." Carter pulled out three small black.....pebbles?
"What are these?"
"Computer chips so we'll be able to communicate with each other."
"Oh! Okay."
Each of us all placed one in our right ears. "Let's bust out our dance moves!"
******
Justin began to walk in my direction. Why wouldn't he just leave me alone? I scanned my brain for excuses to make to get rid of him. This was not the time for him to distract me and get in the way.
"Why aren't you on the dance floor?!" He shouted through the loud music.
"Aren't I on the dance floor?!" I shouted back.
He rolls his eyes at me. "You're standing next to the food table!" I shrugged my shoulders. "Food's good company!"
It's never let me down unlike you.
He held out his hand but I didn't take it. "Dance with me."
My face began to feel hot. I gave him a frown and narrowed my eyes at him. My heart tugged towards the sound of his voice and butterflies swarmed my stomach. I ignored his request and stared at my painted toes.
His black dressy loafers meet my sparkly silver heels. "Dance with me and pretend for just one moment that the world doesn't exist. That I wasn't a jerk. Right now can it just be you, Josephine Jones and me, Justin Garrick?" He says as he takes my hand and lifts my head with his forefinger so my eyes meet his.
My knees buckled and adrenaline crashed through me. I tried to find my voice but it was lost in the thousands of thoughts swirling in my brain. Our eyes met. Suddenly, we were alone in the crowd and after that, there was no going back.
Accepting defeat, I allow myself the luxury of forgetting. As we danced in the middle of our school's large gym right underneath the shiny disco ball, I found myself getting lost in his dark, electric blue eyes.
All the feelings I suppressed were threatening to come out and resurface. I wasn't ready to put my emotions out on display. But no one's ever really is. The space between us seemed to disappear at some point and our lips were millimeters away from each other.
*Crackle. *Crackle.
"The coast is clear. It is time for you to make your way to the office."
"I have to go." I quickly turn around and head out of the gym.
"Josie, wait!" I ignore his calls after me and push through the dancing bodies and pungent smell of cologne and sweat.
As I quickly walk down my schoolś dimly lit hallway I try to shake off the twists in my stomach and my hyper heart. My mind was struggling to stay focused and I couldn't hear anything that Luna and Carter were saying.
"Carter you better watch out. Justin is trying to steal your girl." Luna teased. "What is she talking about? What happened?" I rolled my eyes and remembered that they couldn't see me right now.
"Can we please focus on getting into the principal's office please?" "You do realize you can't date both of them right?" Luna replied.
"Can you be quiet?!"
"I'm still on the roof! I'll meet you guys inside the school." When I got to the principal's office door I shoved Luna in the shoulder. "Really?"
She put her hands up in the air. "What?" She laughed and wiggled her eyebrows at me. She was so dead when we were done with this.
I crossed my arms at her. Luna opened the door and I slipped inside while she kept watching. I went directly to one of Principle Hawkins's large brown rectangular drawers.
Unlocking it with a bobby pin just the way Luna taught me I waited for the sound of the click before pulling it open. I skimmed through the files trying to find ones that had a pattern or anything peculiar.
Then I froze when I came across one file that read Maddie Brooks: Eliminated.
This chapter is a little short but I wanted it to end on a cliffhanger. :)
Uh oh, looks like there's something fishy going on at Josephine's school...can she get to the bottom of it?
Till Next Time,
-Miss Yanxiet :)
